I've been bad and feel the need to confess ...
UGH
My boyfriend moved the end of March to Baltimore. It's made sticking to the diet WAY easier ... which is the one positive from the whole situation. So I went to visit him over the weekend. Mind you, he's living in a hotel room until his company decides where they're going to plant him so I have no fridge. What this boiled down to was I ate 2 meals a day. Morning - Doukin Donuts (half a egg, ham, cheese crossaint minus most of the crossaint and gave away all but maybe 2 bites of the ham) Night 1 - Chicken Quesodilla (just chicken, cheese, and tortilla Night 2 - Medieval Times (Tomato Soup (couple sips) ... waited ... Chicken thigh ... 1/4 of a herb roasted potato ... waited and a few bites of a apple strudel) Night 3 - EASTER (Ham, roasted potatoes (very small maybe 3?), and a small piece of strawberry shortcake with the strawberry chunks removed).
I'm so mad at myself. 1 - Half of what I ate is not on my current "soft" diet and 2- I did have super small portions .... only a couple/few bites of everything ... waited before the meals/desserts ... but seriously??? I had this surgery so I WOULDN'T eat crap ... I'm also upset that my body let me. I was honestly hoping that with the strudel or shortcake I would dump. I was hoping that would be my "punishment" for not doing what I needed to do. Then again, I'm upset enough at myself at the moment so I guess there was no need for my body to punish me.
The other thing I'm worried about is I know I didn't get in my protein. Today I'm back to the strict diet and counting the protein, but what could be the side effects of going 3 days without getting the right amout in? Thanks for any feedback!

Honey, since Feb 23, when i had the bowel resection I had 6 weeks post rny surgery, I have had horrible trouble getting my protein in. My surgeon has done labs, and I'm ok. Not where they want me, but we're working harder.
If it makes you feel better. I am almost 4 months post op, and easter weekend was hard on me too. I had desert, albeit sugar free pudding. I also had potatoes. Not on my list yet.
Then today I had some huge emotional trauma, and OMG what do I do????? Head to the gas station for potato chips. I ate a handful, and got angry at myself. Cried, and then admitted it. I have a food addiction!

I had my surgery after yours so I dont have much to go on. However, I do know that we are all human beings and we all make mistakes. The important part is to understand what went wrong and put in measures to keep it from happening again..like preparing ahead of time. Just learn from it and move on. I think its equally important not to beat yourself up. I think that just leads to be more bad decisions down the line. Remember how you are feeling emotionally right now and do what you can to avoid it. AND celebrate when you do make good decisions. Acknowledge when you make the right choice and feel good about it. We spend so much time beating ourselves up and not enough time feeling good about the things we do right. You are back on track. You could have made a different decision when you realized you didnt dump, GREAT!
what you ate dosent sound so bad. the amount you took in is way less then what you would of b4 so dont beat urself up, it was a holiday weekend.
28 grams of sugar in one sitting will let you know if you are the 33% who actually gets dumping syndrome eat less then that and you wont know 4 sure. i wish i dumped.
3 days w/o proper protein you will be fine just dont make that a habbit cause you will lose your hair and you do not want that.
and your pouch is still healing so it is still swollen allowing you to eat more than what you were told is ok, thats y you have 2 measure everything you put in ur mouth (even if it's unhealthy, dont exceed the amount you are allowed 2 eat in a sitting)
GOOD LUCK ON YOUR JOURNEY!!! YOU'LL BE FINE!!! WE ARE ALL HUMAN!

Where did you get that 28g of sugar figure from?!? As far as I know, there is no magic number for how much sugar someone can tolerate to be considered a "dumper"... and most people who DO dump will get sick on FAR less than 28g of sugar!
Also, hair loss after RNY is NOT a result of not getting enough protein. You can get ALL your protein in and still lose a LOT of hair. You can potentially make the hair loss worse without enough protein, however.

got the 28 grams of sugar from a weight loss surgeon in maine. he said if you can eat 28 grams of sugar w/o dumping in one sitting you are not one of the lucky ones who will dump. yes there are people who will get sick off of less sugar than that, but then that just tells them that they fall into the dumping catergory.
Ok, so you made a mistake and now you are back on track. We have all done it, to one degree or another. Don't continue to mentally beat yourself up over it.
As far as you not getting sick, it is still possible that you are one of the 30% who dump, but that you just did not eat enough sugar to make it happen. Realistically, though, most people dump more easily early out, so you are proabbly in the 70% who don't dump. (That's why those of us who are "veterans" often tell people not to count on dumping as a deterrent to eating high sugar or high fat foods... because most of the time, people don't dump and eventually they will eat something high sugar and NOT get sick, so then they KNOW that they don't dump... and then it's back to plain old-fashioned will power to avoid the sweets.)
A couple of days of being low on protein isn't a huge problem. Stuff happens to people all the time... a bout with the flu or something else that keeps them from eating for a couple of days... your body can deal with it for a short period of time. Just be sure to get back on track ASAP.

Its interesting. I think people dump differently and on different amounts.
I am 9 months out - and at times I do get away eating something sweet. I have started connecting what happens most times and believe it is a form of dumping. I will get nauseaus (i do not throw up though-usually), then I get really really sleepy - I mean like pass out tired. So between the two I am thinking that is a dumping scenario for me. So just because you were fine once - doesnt mean you will never dump! And the scary slippery slope is thinking you do not dump - because then you can become less than careful...
I have had times driving and I seriously think I will just pass out........
not good..

I agree with everyone else. Please don't be so hard on yourself - what you ate wasn't so bad. I've ate the same things myself occasionally. Instead look at this as a learning experience. What can you do differently next time something like this happens?
I use the Unjury Proteins, mixed with water mostly; occasionally adding some other flavorings which I don't think need refrigerating. If you didn't want to take the whole canisters, you could have put scoops in individual baggies and mixing them with water as needed. And bringing a small cooler would have helped also. I've never been to a motel that didn't have an ice machine available. So you could have brought milk and Isopure drinks, etc. I'm still eating baby food sometimes and keep one with me whenever I'm away from home. Oh, and there are also the EAS AdvantEdge protein drinks. So may choices and I can only eat 2 oz 3 times a day - makes for a lot of leftovers! Good luck with your move and the changes in your new life. Barbara
