How did you get  approved for the surgery?  I hear that if you work for the state the insurance will not cover you?  HELP..I had the surgery March 1, but I know of someone who wants to have this done, but she heard different stories.

Thanks..and Happy Mothers Day.

I work for the state of Iowa and got it done however it depends on what insurance plan you are on. Not all of them cover it.

Not a lot of insurance plans cover RNY and other WLS anymore. She needs to call the insurance carrier and see if they will pay for WLS.

I have an acquaintance who works for the PA Attorney General's office, adn she indicated a while back (cannot remember exactly how long it has been, but definitely over a year ago) that  HER insurance had a WLS exclusion.  I don't know, though, if ALL employees who work fro the state of PA have the same inssurance, though, or not (and, fo course, it may alos ahve changed since then).

The only way you will find out si to read the coverage bulletin and see what it says about weight loss surgery or see if it is listed under the Exclusions section.

I don't work for the state, but my surgery was covered under my husbands Capital BC policy....but the company shifted to Highmark and it would not be covered today.

The thing to do is to call the number on your insurance card and ask very specific questions:

Is there coverage under your policy? Or is there and exclusion for bariatric surgery?
Are only certain types of surgery covered?
what are the requirements to get the procedure approved? (get a THOROUGH AND DETAILED list and it will save you a lot of aggravation later!)
Select your surgeon based on insurance requirements (such as center of excellence or not) and as many personal recommendations as you can gather.

You might want to head to the PA forum and check there too!

Hello,

I do not work for the state, but almost my whole family does (and I used to up until 3 yrs ago, as I was under my parents). Unfortunately, State health insurance has a WLS exclusion. Two of my uncles both had their doctors work very hard in proving this was a medical necessity for both of them and both of them were still denied unfortunately... Hopefully they change this policy soon.

Sorry I dont have better news/advice...
