what pedometer are you using if you are using one...is there one that is water proof? that will work in the pool? i am thinking about getting one, not sure how they work or what is needed to even look at them...i just want to keep track of how many mile i will be walking if any....not just the number os steps taken, i guess....perhaps how many calories used also...are they expensive?

thanks for any help
have a great day

I don't use a pedometer, but I do use a Garmin 310XT to track my distances and workouts, this is a bit much for most but they do make smaller units.  It is a GPS based system and is water proof, you can buy an additional foot pod to act as a pedometer and cadance meter while indoors.  It is water prrof but nothing will really track your milage in a pool better than you can.  Simply find the length of your pool either in yards or meters and and multiply your number of lengths by the distance.  The problem with pools and pedometers is that a pedometer typically relies on some sort of impact to to register a step and you have to enter your stride length.  Given that in a pool you have no impact and your stride length is different than walking it wouldn't really work.

Now What I use is probably massive overkill for what most people need. There are many smartphone apps that you can use as a pedometer or track workouts.  The thing is that like most gym equipment the calorie calculations are based on some avg and probably don't truly represent your burn rate giving you a false picture of what you are burning in your workout.  If you are wanting to track distance with calorie burn then you need more of a heart rate montior with advanced calorie computations which will do your calorie burn based on your heart rate which is more accurate.

I started using smartphone apps but hit a point in my training wear the phone apps just weren't enough.

For Mother's Day I asked for a Omron HJ-720ITFFP.  I got it on Amazon.com for $32, so not too expensive.  It is no****erproof, but it can be hooked to your computer to keep track of goals you make for yourself.  It automatically resets at midnight for the next day.  Keeps track of calories with the amount of fat burned, time, aerobic steps with minutes, regular walking steps, distance.  It stores up to 41 days of data in the memory.

Hope this helps!
