I feel out of control

I am pre-op.

For the past 7 months or so my weight has been pretty stable at 267. I even got down to 262. Well all of a sudden I feel like I have NO control. I am eating like its the last supper. Looking back I figured out it's been like this the closer I get to the approval process. My weight is now up to 271. I am just waiting for insurance approval. I know I need to regain control. My body even hurts from the weight gain.

Has anyone gone through this pre-op?

It is really bothering me. I feel like if I can't control myself now, How am I going to control myself after surgery. I also want to add that stopping smoking has nothing to do with it b/c I was doing this before I quit.

Any suggestions, comments??

TIA, Shelly

Many people go through the last meal syndrome.  You need to stop doing this with all your might.  Getting ready for surgery is an important time to reflect on changes.  Yes it's hard I know!

When you have the urge to eat an unplanned meal/snack find something else to do.  Go take a 5 minute walk, a hot bath/shower, read a book.  Distract yourself from the food.

You will have control after surgery I promise.  There will be ups and downs but your pouch and malabsorption will help you tremendously compared to pre-surgery.

I was doing that as well. But I had to do a 6 month weight in with the surgeons office and the nut really chewed me out when I didnt lose anything one month actually gained. Saying what you basically said. SO I was determined to fix it. No pop candy cookies chips nothing. I also promised myself that a week before my surgery (no pre op diet) that I would go to my favorite restaruant and have dinner but only if I stuck to the plan I had made.

Maybe something like that would work?

Pre op I was afraid I would miss so many of my favorite foods and honestly 8 weeks out.. there has not been a single thing I have tried that I could not eat (good and bad) so don't feel that you will never enjoy food again you will and probably most everything.. but just later.  There will be plenty of time to treat yourself after you get to goal. You won't have a choice but to control yourself post op, you just won't want to eat!  Even if something smells and looks amazing to me and I so want to eat it.. after 2 or 3 bites it's enough, I know that sounds strange but it really does work that way.  so don't beat yourself up!! Try hard not to continue gaining, it only makes the surgery more complicated.  I didn't cheat during my 2 week pre op liquid diet because I just kept thinking do I want a safe surgery or do I want a piece of cake.. duhhhhhhhhhh I wanna make it through surgery! I lost 25 lbs in those two weeks.. you can do it too!!!

I remember going throught the "last supper" stage pre-op. I started eating more things because "i'll never be able to eat this again" self-talk. Then it dawned on me...I'll be able to eat ANYTHING I want later, It's not a "never again" thing, It's a "I can eat it in moderation" later thing. LOL. That seemed to help and I was able to stop the "last supper" stage.

Thank you everyone for your kind words. It's means so much to me to have people who "get" where  am coming from. I really need to sit down and make a plan and talk to my dh and get him on board. He is NOT overweight, he in fact is very active (works out 6x's a week) but I have made him my enabler. If I tell him to go get me something he will just so I won't get mad. Which isn't fair to him. We talked a little on the phone today about it, but I think tonight we will go in depth.
Thank you so much!!

Your husband sounds like mine. He's never had a weight problem, is extremely active (rock climbing, snowboarding, biking, Hiking, camping, the works.) and just doesn't "get it". He was NOT unhappy with me the way I was (obviously, or he never would have married me), he's happy I feel better and am more active and can do more things with him. Sit down with him and have a good heart to heart. It'll probably do wonders for your situation.

Oh yeah, I've been through it. I had to do a 6 month diet and exercise program to get approval, and in 6 months I managed to lose a grand total of 6 pounds. Not too impressive!

But once the approval came through and I went on the pre-op diet, I went after it like I was on a quest. Two weeks on the pre-op diet was tough (it should have been one week, but surgery was rescheduled), but after surgery it was MUCH easier to stay away from bad foods. They don't even taste good anymore. The thought of pizza and cheeseburgers make me nauseous, but now fresh veggies are like candy to me. I would never have believed that would happen before surgery.

My arm is stretched and waving my hand!!!!!!  I have done this and not just once either. My journey to weight loss surgery has been a long one and I have gotten close 3 times and each time I did this.  However, this time, when I knew THIS really was the time, I actually lost a few pounds in the last few weeks before surgery.
I think it's totally normal.
