im taking 2 caps of vitamin d3 that are 5,000 IU from walmart. i just read somewhere if it's liquid capsules they are not the right ones?

edit: my vit d level is 26.6. it hasn't changed since before surgery. it's still low and i don't know exactly HOW much to take. my surgeon told me to get d3 2000 IU and take 1 per day. i bought 5,000 IU and started taking 2 per day but its the softgels so i'm assuming that's the wrong kind.

if i order the 5,000 IU from vitalady, should i be taking 1 or 2 per day? i'm somewhat afraid to order the 50,000 IU unless would i only be taking that once per week?

Soft gels have oil inside and are supposed to make it absorb better. That’s true for non-RNY, but is not true for RNY because we malabsorb fat. We need dry D3. I use Vitalady Tender Dry Vitamin D3-5 5,000IU ordered online at: http://www.vitalady.com/

Age at RNY: 55, Height: 5'4", Consultation Weight: 331 lbs-12/1/2009, RNY Surgery Weight: 281 lbs-3/22/2010, Goal Weight Reached: 141 lbs-6/23/2011, Lowest Weight: 126 lbs-12/11/2011

Current Age: 61, Current Weight: 161 lbs-5/20/2016Total Weight Loss Maintained: 170 lbs

I would get your surgeon to do a blood test to see how much D3 you really need. I was given an Rx of 50,000 IU per week in the form of liquid softgels. I have no idea why I was given sofgels when they are not absorbed as well.

Anyhow, I have ordered Natrol brand Vitamin D3 tablets (10,000 IU, five times a week) from vitacost. They are a bit expensive but I have a lot o faith in the quality of this brand.

Yes, definitely switch to the dry form as this is what i have been told by nearly all the members at the various forums I visit.

As for the strength you can get 1000 IU or even 2000 IU  tablets from vitacost.com

Unfortunately, many doctors including the WLS surgeons seem to the prescription D - D2 in a softgel will work fine for us.  They are all in a dream world.  We need Dry D3 - which is usually in a capsule.  If yours are in a tablet, make sure you check the bottle to see if it says they are dry D3 - since that is what we need to absorb it properly.  From what I have been told by several nutritionists and surgeons, the best Dry D3 is from Bio Tech.  You can get it in doses of 5,000 IU's or 50,000 IU's.  You can get them directly from BioTechnologies.com but they are alot more expensive - I know because I started off getting them there.  Then I found out about Vitalady.com - she sells them also at a much lower price.

If you are taking 10,000 units 5 days per week, it would be much cheaper and easier for you to take 50,000 units once  per week and you would get the amount of vitamin D but you only have to take 1 capsule per week instead of 5 tablets which would save you alot of money.  Just a thought

50,000 IU D3 DAILY until your level gets above 80.

My Vit D was 79 - the PA told me that was the highest she had ever seen.  I use Bariatric Advantage Dry D 3 - 5000  IU per capsule.  I had been taking it 2 times a day with my calcium supplement, but I think I will cut back a little.  They are very reasonably priced for a 6 month supply.

Why are you cutting back?  79 is absolutely perfect.  I'd keep it there.

a level of 79 is perfect.  The normal range for vitamin D on the lab report says 30-100 but for us due to our malabsorbtion, we really want our levels to be between 80 and 100, so you are right where you want to be.  Did they do a PTH and calcium level?  These tests together give you an idea of how your bones are doing.  A vitamin D level where yours is, general is cause for a good PTH which is good.  Low vitamin  D levels cause a high PTH which is bad.

Please dont' cut back your dose unless your level goes over 100.  I have pretty much been hanging around 100 for the past year.    Then about 3 or 4 months ago I went to 134 and my Endocrinologist said we would watch it since my PTH was so good and some labs actually say you can go up to 150.  Well last month, she got really upset because it came back at greater than 150 - they couldn't measure it. So, I had to stop it for a week and then retest.  It went down to 112 and then I cut my dose from 50.000 units 3 times per week to 2 times per week.  I just had my level rechecked on Thursday to see where it is now.

So, as you can see based on my level - your level of 79 is great.  I actually strive to stay around 90-100 but if it goes a little bit over I am fine, I just don't like it to go too much over.
