I am a type 2 diabetic.  I had RNY on 4/26 and am down 32 pounds.  My question is I was taking 5 oral meds whick I have stopped.  I was taking 67 U of Lantus at night which also has been stopped.  I was taking 15 U or Regular before meals.  I am now only on a sliding scale and my sugar levels are staying in the 200's.  I am averaging 4-6 units 3 times a day now.  For those of you that were diabetic before surgery when could you come completely off insulin?

I think it's different for everyone, but I came off of Lantus the day I came home from the hospital.  My fasting sugars are consistently in the 80-90s and my last A1C was at 6.5 (6 weeks after surgery).  I would go to your Primary Physician and have an A1C done, and keep monitoring your sugars.

Good luck!

Thanks!  I am off the Lantus but still using a sliding scale for regular insulin.

Before my surgery i wason 5 shots of insulin a day (3 shots of Novolog and 2 shots of Levimir)
My numbers were always in the 200's even with that

My last shot i took was on 9/14/10 (the night before my surgery)

Since then my numbers have been under 100 everyday and my last A1C i took last month came back at a 4.3!!!!

Good luck with everything

I was taking 66 units of Lantus every night before surger my levels were 130 -140, I came off the lantus 2 days after coming home from the hospital . My fasting levels are now 85 -101.
I was only on insulin for 6 mths before surgery. My sister in laws boyfriend is still on his insulin he is 6 mths out . But he is taking a lot less than he was before surgery.

Same here.  I was taking 250 units of Humalog daily, 200 units of Lantus, 20 mcg of symilin, 3000 mg metformin.  About 2 weeks post surgery I was off everything,  Everyone is different, but that is the reason I had the surgery was to control my diabetes.

My endrocrinologist now put on my chart that my diabetes is in remission.

Check with your PCP to see if being off lantus is wise being that your sugars are too high. Being a new post-op, it isn't your calorie intake that's giving you higher sugars. I had my last insulin dose the day after surgery, but everyone is different. Steady dose of insulin that you get from lantus could work better to lower your overall sugars, then supplement with the regular for a tighter control. Good luck!!
