I'm allowed to eat nuts/seeds as of about 2 weeks ago. Yesterday I was at my aunts and she had a bag of trail mix. I ate some of the sunflower seeds & peanuts out of it. Probably about 1/4 of a cup or less, and today I did again. I know the fat content in nuts is pretty high but they are listed as ok to eat to get in protein......does anyone else eat peanuts/sunflower seeds post op.

I get shelled pumpkin seeds that are seasoned from netrition.com--they are like crack to me! LOL I can't keep them in the house all the time or I'd eat them ALL the time! I love nuts, especially cashews and almonds. I'm not a big peanut person, except in peanut butter! But yes, I eat nuts and seeds! Emerald nuts makes AWESOME chocolate almonds, and cinnamon ones that taste like cinnamon sugar ones And Planters makes a vanilla/caramel almond mix--DELICIOUS!

I don;t like seeds and I don;t like peanuts, but I ahve been eating cashews and almonds since my surgeon's plan included them.  The nuts are a good way to get some protein AND some healthy fats.  I added them as one of the protein snacks to help combat the dry skin.

My top two choices of nuts are soy nuts and sunflower seeds.  They have the highest protein content out of the nuts that I like.  I don't like peanuts so I don't even know what the protein is on that compared to other nuts.  I don't eat sunflower seed too often, only because nutritionally the soy nuts are a lot better for you.  My store carries roasted soy nuts, bbq, honey roasted and hot and spicy so I have a few choices for the soy.

I love nuts! I usually eat plain, unsalted almonds from Trader Joes.

The below is a copy and paste I did about a year ago...
Went to the local support group this evening...We had the hospital nutritionist as the guest speaker.  We had talked before, going through my surgery.  I e-mailed him yesterday and asked him about nuts...how much we should have and which nuts to avoid.  He spoke this evening on the subject.  Thought I would share a couple of the highlights (we know most of these things already).
He said try and limit the amount of nuts you consume throughout the day.  Nuts have great nutritional value but are high in oils and fats.  He recommended almonds and walnuts the most.  He said to try and avoid any nuts that have more than 2 grams of saturated fats per oz.  Below is the list of nuts he gave me...I'll add the fat and saturated fat tables to it.  Brian

Nut                   Fat                   Saturated Fat
Pistachios           13                    1.5
Almonds             15                    1
Cashews             13                    3
Macadamias       22                    3.5
Peanuts              14                    2
Pecans               21                    2
Walnuts             19                    1.5
Pumpkin             21                    2
Brazil nuts         18                    4
Pine Nuts           19                    1.5
Sunflower Seed 14                    1.5

Thanks Brian....I started eating peanuts this weekend to get some protein while I was traveling and I was wondering if it was good for me.

I'm always late to interesting threads..... Anyway, the NUT I saw on Friday said to avoid seeds & small nuts until 3 months postop, without giving the rationale why. However, since she's the 3rd NUT I've seen in this journey and I didn't feel particularly confident in her facts, I'm gonna disregard what she said and eat pistachios as I darn well please.

I was so happy when I could get back to my nuts and seeds after surgery.  I have a jar of almonds and a jar of pistachios on my desk at work and these are my healthy snacks for myself and anyone who stops by.

I also enjoy the David brand pumpkin seeds (for magnesium) and other macronutrients.  They are the lightest in salt that I can find.

I also noticed someone posted about blue diamond almonds with dark chocolate cocoa powder!!!  My newest fav but too expensive to share with everyone at work lol.

These nuts and seeds contribute to my high HDL and low LDL!!!
