I don't know your medical history etc so you'd really want to talk to your doctor about this as well but..
An IUD is a great option. It's long term and pretty fail safe with little to no side effects. It's a bit expensive to get put in initially typically but requires no maintanence other than your annual gyn visits.
Implanon is another good option. It's a tiny stick and goes into your upper arm and lasts for 3 years. It's pretty reliable as well.
If you're under 200 lbs, the patch is an option. Otherwise NuvaRing is the other big option.
Personally, I was happiest with an IUD and managed to keep it for 5 years without any incidents. I hated oral contraceptives after surgery - had a 5 month period that never ended. I switched to NuvaRing and found no relief from that either. I spotted throughout NuvaRing. Hope this helps!

Hmmmm...I wanted to get Nuvo-Ring, and when I talked to my doctor..she said...
Nuvo-Ring Babies are soooo cute!!
I was like what??????
She said that she had five patients in her office (she is not an ob/gyn), and she said that three of them got pregnant while using it as a primary means of birth control!
That scared the heck out of me.
I too am looking into Mirena - however, just in case you were not aware, they recomend IUDs for people that have had at least one child. I am not sure why that is the recomendation, but I am sure your physician can provide some insight.
Regardless, Good luck on your decision. :)

Prior to surgery I talked with my gyn and my surgeon about birth control options. The IUD (in this case we were discussing Mirena) was the first choice with Implanon being the second choice. My surgeon recommended waiting until well after the surgery to have the IUD put in place. He explained that if I were to have abdominal cramping or other issues, they'd have to rule out the IUD and the RNY as being the culprit which could lead to unnecessary tests and problems with diagnosis. Since you're 8 months out, that wouldn't be an issue for you! I think that doctors used to me MUCH more fussy about not placing IUDs in women who didn't already have children. I had a friend who had to battle her doctor for an IUD, but that was about 10 years ago. My gyn had no issue with me getting an IUD, despite never having had children and possibly still wanting them.
