Clear Liquid Diet Pre-op Question
I'm going to repost this here as well...
I have to be on a clear diet only the day before my surgery next week. I do not like to drink broth straight from the can, it doesn't even sound appetizing to me. I was thinking of making my homemade chicken noodle soup but putting it through a sieve so I just have the broth and drinking udon soup broth (minus noodles) as well. Would this be okay on a clear liquid diet?
Thanks!

Long as you're just drinking broth, doesn't matter if it's homemade or from a can.

I made a huge batch of broth before I started my liquid diet (actually made chicken, fish, and vegetable broths) and froze it all into 1 cup portions to last through the first month or so of post-op dieting. Broth freezes great and it is no harder to make a bunch than a little at a time. I also pureed and froze some of the broth and the chicken or fish that I had poached in the liquid to have when I reach the soft food stage - kind of a two-for-one deal. ;)
You can add veggies and herbs and spices when cooking the broth - but make sure not to add any sugar or a spice blend with sugar. I froze a pretty bland, mild version for post-op but spiced up the pre-op broth the way I like it to make the liquid diet more flavorful.
I don't eat beef or mushrooms - but strained udon soup should be fine as long as there is no added sugar. And adding some extra soy sauce adds 2 grams of protein per tablespoon as well, depending on the brand!
The only concern would be that some of the starch from the noodles from the chicken noodle soup and the udon noodles will leave more carbs and calories in the broth than plain broth would have.

That's good advice about the noodles. I can make the chicken soup minus the noodles, then puree the set aside veggies and chicken for when I get into the soft stage. With the udon, it is instant so I'll just make the broth and no noodles. I'll look at the soy sauce, any extra proteins help. Thanks for your help.
Thanks everyone! My doctor only requires a low fat diet for at least 2 weeks and then all clear liquids the day before. I am just trying to plan some things for next week. I am making dinners, etc. this weekend to see my family through while I am in the hospital so I thought I may make some soup while I was at it for Monday.
