I am almost 2 months out and was wondering when you tried a salad for the first time. I know everyone is different, but was wondering what your experience was like with a salad.

My dietician told me to go nuts with salad at my one month follow up. I haven't had lettuce yet (I've got IBS) but tomatoes, green peppers, cucumbers, etc all seem to go down without trouble.

I had some problems with strictures around the 4th and 6th week post-op so I waited a bit longer than my surgeon suggested. His suggestion was not to try salad or any raw veggies until around 6 to 8 weeks out. I waited until I was around 10 weeks out to try it. At first it would kind of hurt my pouch when I ate it. I had an ulcer discovered around the 6th week out, so I think that may have been why. Probably at about 4 months out is when salad no longer bothered me and I could actually enjoy eating it.

When I did salad, I would have stuff like lettuce, cucumber, mushrooms, ect. I didn't try tomatos until 4 months out because my surgeon suggested not to have any kind of tomato product until then.

Just go slow when you eat your first salad.  A lot of roughage in salads which can be uncomfortable.  Over 2 years out, I eat nice salads every day for lunch with no problems.
