Just getting started....Nervous

I just got things rolling to have gastric bypass surgery. I'm nervous and excited...I have to go through a 6 month diet program before my insurance will approve it. thats getting started. i see the dietician on Monday, as well as have my upper gi, and abdominal ultrasound. I am nervous, this is something ive thought about for years, I guess its because its all becoming real thats making me nervous. Any suggestions??? Im starting at 392.2 lbs. Ive already lost some on my own because I gave up sodas and am cutting out(trying to) unneccssary sugars....
Im nervous and scared and excited!

I'm pre-surgery too, starting at 354, and I am also scared. The changes in how you eat are so big they're really intimidating, and the recovery from the surgery sounds scary too. It's good to see I'm not the only one who is nervous. All my friends who had it say it's worth it.....
I don't know, maybe I'm weird, but I'm also scared because I don't know how to be the "new me" I'm going to turn into after the surgery! I'm scared of being thin? I must be crazy! But I've never had to deal with getting propositions from guys and I don't know how to handle them; I don't know how to shop without grabbing everything I find that fits....
I'm also worrying about some of the ramifications at my job. I teach and I don't know how I'll schedule food and fluids, or how I'll cope when I'm up there farting stinky gas like a crazy thing in front of a class of college kids!
It's a huge life change!!! It's got to be normal to be nervous about something this big. :-)

Ladies... Nervous is good, scared is not necessary! Excited, fer sure! I had my surgery almost 8 weeks ago, or is it 7? I started at 412, by the time I had surgery I was at 370. I lost most the weight doing like you, cutting out the soda, and the carbs, bread, rice, (two of the hubbys faves!) and fast food, taco bell was a staple in my diet. Last few weeks I did the Optifast shakes for breakfast and lunch, and a little bit of meat (protein) and lotsa veggies for dinner. Comes off relatively easily if you set your mind to it, and have a target, just get to surgery. Drink lots of water, is my advice, and think about all the new clothes you're going to need!! Pre surgery I was looking forward to (the most) the prospect of cleaning out my closet... which I just did last week. 3 Huge black garbage bags of clothes that were too big (32, 34's 5X's) And I pulled out of hiding in my toddler's bottom dresser drawer, ton.. And tops that I haven't worn in 10 years. A half a dozen of my favorite tops that didn't fit for years but I couldn't bear to say good bye to... and now they fit!! Awesome!! Still wearing the same bras, but they fit sooo much better, I am no longer spending half the day adjusting. And my panties are getting a little baggy, but I'm gonna wear'em til they fall off! Am I feeling different, not really... not yet, but it is exhillerating when I put something on I knnow hasn't fit in years!!
Day to day life, I just went back to school, I have my protein shake in the am, I bring a 'blender bottle' with a Syntax Nectar (like juice) protein shake, a double shot, with lots of ice, and sip on that throughout the day... lunch time I eat part of a yogurt or have a couple crackers and cheese. Lots of water, sometimes with Crystal Light tea mixed in... In the afternoons I have another protein shake, like early dinner time (4-5:00)... My hubby gets home kinda late, so we don't usually eat til 7-7:30, at which time I have a couple bites of whatever I made him. In the eve, I drink more water, sometime I have a SF pop or fudgecicle, yum!
I get my 100 grams of protein, no problem, and try like hell to get my 8-10 glasses of water. At 8 weeks, it's getting pretty easy. I don't veer too far from the usual, cuz lots of things I try to eat make my tummy not happy. Dinner time, sometimes the things I make for him, sound and smell super yum, but one bite and I know, nope, not for me, and I'll get a peice of cheese or something else, that I know wont make me hurl. I have been having a little bit of soft veggies here and there, since I drink so much protein throughout the day, I can afford the space... LOL. Best advice I can give while eating, is do NOT eat and drink at the same time, stop drinking and do not start again, 30 minutes before to 30 minutes after.... And the other thing... LISTEN to your tummy.... if the smell is making you queasy, for god sakes, don't eat it! And if you are 2 or 3 bites and you're starting to feel full, STOP!! Don't think oh, there's gotta be room for one more, cuz you WILL regret it!! I have had a couple incidents where whatever it was was tasing soo good I thought, oh just one more little bite... I knew even when I was chewing, it was a bad idea, but swallowed it anyway. Those couple of times, I ended up over the toilet... So please EAT SLOW, CHEW WELL and STOP when your tummy is full!!!
And the other bit of advice, even if you never post anything here, read what people post, I spend alot of time in the evening, just reading, cuz somewhere every question you have floating around in your head, even ones you didn't know were there, get answered at least a dozen times. Very helpful resource!!
Good luck and you wont ever regret it!

The further you get into the process the more confident and less nervous you'll feel. I was really nervous at first, but after lots of education on the procedure, reading about how life after surgery will be, and lots of encouragement from the wonderful people here on OH, my nerves have calmed a lot. Now it's just pre-op jitters.
I started this whole process out in May, weighing in at 383lbs. My insurance requires a 3 month supervised diet which I started May 13th and I've lost 19lbs so far, so that's good. If I can give you some suggest something about the diet is to take it seriously! No, it's not going to be easy at first, but it gets easier after a while, but getting used to whole, healthy foods and cutting all the junk out of your diet now will make the post-op transition much easier!
Best of luck to you! You've come to the right place for support! :)

My advice for all who are in the beginning stages is the same - so if some of you have read this before, forgive me - it bears repeating!
1. Learn all you can! Knowledge is power and will relieve some of your fears.
2. Attend support groups - it is a key to long term success.
3. Begin exercising now - even short walks with strengthen your core muscles and make your recovery MUCH simpler. (I know, not fun. But just start with some simple things. You'll be glad you did.)
4. Double check with your insurance company as to their FULL list of requiremetns for approval. I did not do this early out and found that my insurance required much more than my doctor required and it resulted in some significant delays. This way, if you need appointments for other things (doctor's letter, psychological eval, stress test, sleep study, whatever!) you can certainly get those done during your 6 month window.
And finally - as you read these boards, bear in mind that MANY people only post here when there is a problem or an issue. So on any typical day, you do NOT get a realistic sampling of the RNY experience - it is definitely skewed toward the "I have a problem" side of things. Many, many of us are out here living life without any complications, and it's beyond description it's so good!!!
