why you decided not to have ds?!?!
OK so they called today and said i just need to give them my 5 year medical history and i would be set for rny! Well that would be great except the fact that i went to a ds consultation and thought i wanted the ds surgery! Well now i dont know if its just the fact that i am so close to having surgery that i am ready to throw in the towel and just have the rny or if i actually want it. I was reading some stuff about the ds trying to find out if its really what i want to do and now i am scared to death of it!! And rny is sounding so much better!!!
so!!! That being said anyone in the same situation or has been in the situation? why did you decide to have rny?
any feedback is greatly appreciated!!!

I started my journey wanting the band. I was only about 90lbs overweight and didn't "look" like I needed an RNY (I say that with quotes because now I understand there is no look to who needs a RNY). Anyway, after seminars and support groups and many meetings with my doctor it turns out that the RNY is what I would need to achieve my goals. I wanted to be off meds to help save my liver which was going bad due to lots of meds and fatty liver disease. I wanted to stop the progression of type 2 diabetes that I just got diagnosed with. My cholesterol was going up, my triglycerides were bad. My mom had a stroke at 55 years old, I wanted to avoid this.
Only the RNY will take care of most of these medical problems.
So if you are pretty healthy and just want to take off the weight before it causes damage then any surgery you want will work for you if you make it work. But if you have some serious health issues then RNY is the best way to go.
BTW, all my medical problems are solved and I do not take any medication except thyroid and that is pretty normal! And I am only 9 weeks out from surgery.

Like I all ready told them I wasn't even aware there was such a thing as the DS. I did some research on WLS before hand and it never came up, and I didn't notice the DS posts on the main forum prior to on my old account.
if I had known I would have surely gone to Kesharian or whatever his name is to at least see if I were a candidate because I would have a working pyloric valve, I could eat a high healthy raw fat diet and just a healthier diet in general plus I could eat some ******g soup like a normal person, but I'd still have to watch the simple carbs.
If not then the sleeve would have been great too.
Now, I'll just live with my stupid decision and make the best of it.

I did many hours of research on all surgeries and looked at how would fit into my life. I knew that restriction alone would not be enough for me so I needed a procedure that included a malabsorbtion aspect which meant RNY or DS. Unlike many my insurance would have allowed for either one so that was not an issue.
What I required was a kick start to a healthy life. Something that would allow me to drop a significant amount of weight fairly quickly and adopt the healthy lifestyle I had tried to get into before.
After weighing the pros and the cons I decided the best surgery for me was the RNY. I have had complications as a result but still stnd by my decision. I may have lost more faster with the DS but I am unsure if I would be able to maintain my physical activities in my post-op life. I have a hard enough time getting adequate calories with RNY and couldn't imagine trying to balance the DS math in an attempt to get the calories I require physically.

HONESTLY...... I really wanted the DS. I spent months researching WLS and I was convinced that it was a far better surgery. My insurance would NOT approve it because my bmi was below 50. Hubby was prepared to pay for the surgery but not prepared for me to go out of the country for it. It was a catch 22. I could afford to pay cash in the US but if I developed complications post op then my insurance would not pay to cover it. Paying 35k for the surgery could turn into 100k + if complications arose.
In the end, I went with the RNY and i'm very happy that I did. Im 20 pounds shy of 100 pounds in a little over 4 months post op. Hubby, toddler, and I certainly eat %100 better. Your stomach is like prime real estate post op and if your like me, you become a food snob and figure you only have space for the very best that your tummy can hold.
One other thing. The VITAMIN requirements are REAL and hate to say is a chore and pain in the ass. Rny and DS both require daily and accurate doses of vitamins. There really is no way around it but you must be prepared to be EXTRA diligent with the DS.
You must decide based on your own gut feelings, eating, and ability to follow through with supplementation.
Best Wishes with whatever you choose!

but Yeuda had DS revision and he did not seem to be at BMI 50 at all when he had it done this year.
