So disappointed...two more weeks of this darn g-tube

I went for my 2 week post-op check up.  Every thing went well except that I have to keep this g-tube in for 2 more weeks.  I really hate this thing.  It seems like I can smell it all the time even though no one else can.

I am getting enough proteins through my food, I eat 5-6 small high protein foods a day.  But my liquids is what I have a hard time getting in.  I get in about 48 oz in a day.  I do try but it's just so hard and along with all the time I have to wait before and after eating.  I guess I'll be up till late at night to get the liquids in.  The doctor said that she wants the g-tube in for 2 more weeks especially with the hot weather until I can get all my liquids.  It was much easier this week to drink more than last week, so I'm hoping I can get it all in.  I do not want to go back to work with this darn tube still in.

Just venting. Thanks for listening to me rant.

P.S. Good news today was that I lost 19 lbs since surgery day.

I had to keep mine for just udner 3 weeks and was glad to get rid of it.  It did make it easy to get all of the protein and water in during those first few weeks though (and allowed me to use up some protein powders that I didn't like without having to gag them down!)

Interesting that she took mine out when I was only getting about 50 ounces of water a day by mouth, though....  maybe she has changed her thinking on it in the past 4 years.

You don't drown by falling in the water. You drown by staying there.

I am not dehydrated, but she said with the hot weather she felt more comfortable keeping it in until my next two week appt.  I understand, but just disappointed because I really want this thing out.

Hi Mia, I had surgery June 29th. I went yesterday and had my tube removed.  My surgeon's PA said everything looked good and just wants me to keep getting my liquids and protein in.  I feel so much better now that it is gone.  Everyone says we're all different!

For me, the worse part of my surgery was the g-tube for six weeks afterward.  I sooooo hated that damn thing.  However, since you're stuck with it, I'd certainly use it to your advantage.

I took most of my water and protein through the g-tube because there was simply no way I was going to be able to ingest it to the degree I needed to at first otherwise.  By the time it was removed, I was feeling up to the challenge of getting in my fluids and proteins, so while I hated that thing, it was also a good tool for me when I was unable to fully comply with dietary requirements.

Glad you were able to rant because I seem to remember I also had a couple of those myself before it was finally removed.

Welcome to the loser's bench!!!

What is a g-tube?  I had a pain ball tube but I'm thinking this is something different?

It's a gastric tube... it goes into the remnant stomach (and is used to put fluids (and nasty protein shakes, LOL) into the old stomach).  You can see it in the picture of my one-week post-op incision on my profile.  Most people don't get one (and I never really got an answer as to why I did).
