Waking up in pain??

I am 3 weeks post op from an open RNY.  I can lay down and fall asleep just comfortably (no pain), but I only get about 3-4 hours of sleep at a time and wake up in pain around my belly and sides.  Does anyone else have this and when were you able to sleep longer plus wake up w/out the pain?  It does go away after a half an hour or so.  I would really like to get a full nights sleep before I have to head back to work.

Just copy/pasting this from my reply to the poster above your post:

It is always good to follow up with your surgeon, but more than likely it is the same thing I have had....

My surgeon explained that the muscle/fat there is the largest they have to cut through in order to get their instruments in.  That should be your largest incision and that is the one they stick the staple gun in to.  They do a lot of moving around through that incision during your surgery.  Then when they go to back out of it all and have to close up, they staple that muscle back together.  The pain I had, he explained, was the muscle pulling with the staples as I regained usage of that muscle and the nerves that are reconnecting is what will cause the little jolts of shock through there and the burning sensation.  I also feel mine most when turning.  Mainly getting out of bed or turning over in bed.

I too have not slept well since my surgery.  You and I have the same surgery date and I am just now able to sleep comfortably on my left or right side for a few hours, but when turning from my right side over to my left, I have to hold my left side as it still hurts.  I still do not sleep all night w/out waking off/on through the night.  I know it will get better, just wi**** would sooner than later.  ha ha

Yes I was like that as well, that's why I slept on the sofa for a month where I didn't have to lay flat, try that.  Hope you get a good nights sleep soon!

I had surgery 6 weeks ago and still wake up a little sore in my belly. It seems like laying down for several hours just makes me achy. It's MUCH better now than it was early post-op and I'm sure it'll go away in the near future. Seems normal to me since we've recently had out guts rearranged.

You are probably sleeping too much (or trying toi roll too much) onto your side(s) in the middle of the night, and that pulls the abdominal muscle. Try propping pillow on both sides to help keep you on your back. I slept in a recliner the first month plus because of that problem. "Ora

I will be 4 wks post op tomorrow after having a lap RNY but I did have a problem with bowel pain because the pain killers slowed everything down so much I was not having any movements just painful gas. The nurse suggested Milk of Magnesia and wow did it work! After that I didnt have any discomfort other than the healing process.  Just a thought. Call your doctors office if it hurts too bad. We all need our sleep.
