Whey protein powder vs. HMR70

I was told that I could still use my whey protein powder as long as I was getting my adequate amount of protein in everyday.  I bought the HMR70 protein and not really feeling it, it's not good for making pudding and the whey protein is better for making protein shakes.

Is anyone else using whey protein powder or are you using the HMR70? I know that a lot of people in different states probably are using something different! Here where I live it's HMR70 and I'm thinking about sticking with the whey protein since it seems to work better for me.

HMR70 is not good as a pudding or in your cereal, oatmeal etc.

Oh holy crap!

I just checked out the HMR stuff online.  Is it REALLY $40 for 18 shakes?  OMG

I had actually never heard of them.  It seems the benefit is that they are lactose free?

I was never told to stop the whey shakes and still drink them 8 years later.

I think it's ok to have the whey but check with your doc.

Lots of protein powder is lactose free.  There are egg white protein and soy isolate protein.  In addition, whey isolate protein is lactose free.  Whey concentrate has lactose in it but whey isolate does not.

It's not cheap, but I got mine from the Weight Management Center at the hospital where I had my surgery and it's still expensive but cheaper than if you bought it online.

The only flavors they have is vanilla and chocolate.  Since I'm having a problem with anything chocolate I got the vanilla, but like I said it's not good for making pudding whether with water or soy milk....doesn't mix very well.

Just a guess, but is this HMR70 is sold by your doctor?  Whey protein isolate is typically the most commonly recommended for RNY post ops. DAVE

actually it's sold by the Weight Management dept. of the hospital I had the surgery.  They are trying to get you to buy the stuff and the vitamins and supplements that you need everyday.  But it's cheaper for me to just buy it from the drugstore.

A little effort to locating other sources of vitamins and protiens will save you $$.  I'd be skeptical of a surgeon or hospital "pushing certain brands"  as their intentions are at making money, not saving you $$ on your post op needs.  I happen to still use an unflavored whey isolate that is generic. Even at 5 years post op, I add it to foods 3-5 times per week for additional protein.  Make sure you take a dry D3--low D issues are common.  50K IU dry D3 are used by many post ops, starting by taking 3-4 per week.  Calcium citrate daily--don't take with your iron supplement.  Separate any iron supplement by a couple of hours.  Good vitamin with 2x RDA levels. I had to add a vitamin K to prevent bruisiing.  Monitor your lab reports closely, always getting a printed copy for future reference.  Sublingual B12 daily at 1000mc.  Vitamin levels can be adjusted up or down based on lab reports.
