I was recently prescribed Depakote for migrain headaches. I have been reading up on the adverse effects of the medicine and the thing that worries me most is that it can damage the liver and pancreas. Has anyone taken this drug? Is it safe for RNY patients?

I dont have any input for RNY patients here, but my 8 year old was put on Depakote for mirgrains are well she.  It made her basically freakin out, crying uncontrollably for no reason she felt horrible.  And, I researched the meds and it is also used as a bipolar medicine.  I know everyone doesnt have the same effect.  But this was pretty awful.

So far this is not sounding too good. I have noticed in just the couple of days I have been on it that I am really emotional. I don't like that "crybaby" feeling.

I took Depakote for years for epilepsy with no problems.   It also helped with the headaches that I was having, which was a welcome side effect!

I should say that I took it before I had my RNY.

I have been taking Depakote Sprinkles for the last 2 years for Bi-Polar 1 disorder. I was originally diagnosed 40 years ago with Bi-Polar 1 and this medication has been a Godsend for me since I started to use it 6 years ago. I used to take the coated tablets before RNY and since RNY I switched to Depakote Sprinkles because it has a better rate of absorption. Depakote is used for many illnesses.

Depakote can lower your L-carnitine levels quite a bit.  A good friend became very tired and 'out of it' after years of taking depakote and experienced a huge benefit after supplementing with L-carnitine.  Maybe that will be helpful if you decide to stay on the drug. (I think it also depletes vitamin K but am not sure about that).
