I have people ask me all the time what is ur goal??So I am curious as to what to say..I am almost 5'3 and according to Doc it is somewhere between 107 and 131, or thereabout, but the according to what the general weight of a woman my age is around 140. As u can see this makes it kinda confusing. So do u pick a weight according to the Doc or according to general public.  How do u come up with a goal?

I put a weight goal here on my tracker as my wish list, but my true goal was to reach a healthy BMI, and I have accomplished that. Now my goal is to get stronger, fit, and not gain the weight back LOL

I would base your goal maybe in between what your doctor says versus what you have researched. One thing about goals, is that you can adjust them as you go along. So if you feel before you reach your goal that you are at a good weight for your body, that's ok. Or if you hit your goal but feel you should lose a little more, that's ok as well. It is more of a starting point.

My surgeon doesn't give people a goal weight. Most of our bodies have been through hell over the years and an arbitrary number isn't going to work. My goal is to have a normal BMI. When I get there (10 more pounds), I'll reevaluate based on how I feel and how I look. Honestly, I hate when people ask questions like, "Sooo what's your goal?" or "How much weight have you lost?" I usually say something like, "Not really sure." and change the subject bc it's never my close friends or family who ask. It's usually a nosy neighbor or coworker.

This is what I have been basing my goal from, so when I tell people that I have about 65 more pounds to loose they always re-act like that is way to much. They almost always say from where?!

The chart this person posted is using the VERY BOTTOM of the "normal" BMI range -- not even the WHOLE "normal" range --, where the lowest number in the range is actually the threshold for "underweight" so if you are shooting for a weight in the range from this chart, I can understand why people are asking you where you think you are going to lose that amount of weight from...

The numbers in your chart are even lower than the numbers for a "normal" BMI!!!  For someone my height, for example, the cutoff for a normal BMI is 145 pounds whereas your chart indicates that "ideal" is 108-132!  It is one thing for someone to try tpo get to a normal BMI, but this is trying to get obese, MO, and SMO people "skinny"!

After having someone I know commit suicide recently because she couldn;t get to some completely arbitrary "goal" weight, I have to tell you that this really upsets me because I fear that it will set someone up for failure if they try to follow this and cannot meet this "ideal".

I need to bow out of this now before I say something I might regret.

According to the above posted chart I'd be considered overweight for my height with my initial goal weight.  Other charts I've seen showed me at a normal BMI with my goal weight and height.  If I use this one it's normal http://www.halls.md/body-mass-index/bmi.htm.

The one I linked is what I usually used as it compares not only BMI but also how my weight relates to other women my age.

Yes, the link you posted uses the "standard" numbers. I like the thing with the age -- I have not seen that before except with body fat % -- thanks for posting it. It says that for a woman in my age range (I turn 49 next week) I am in the 35th percentile which means that 65% of women my age weigh more than I do. I have no idea what they base that on but I'll take it!

I still think body fat percentage is the best number out there in terms of an overall indicator, since it takes muscle and bone mass into account rather than just height and weight. According to the BMI chart, I am just barely "normal" ("overweight" if I am retaining water, LOL) and my body fat percentage is 25% (at the lower end of "optimum" for someone my age), yet by the chart posted above, I would have to be 3 inches taller to be "ideal" at my weight! (Setting people up for diasppointment and a sense of failure, IMO.)

I only answered this question in this way b/c this is what my doc based weight goals off of!! If I totally agreed and felt comfortable with this answer I wld not have posted this question. I am failry new to this whole surgical weight loss thing so I do not know all the answers to my new life. Btw 8 yrs ago I did weigh 130 so I didn't see that as such a big deal, which is why I posted the question. Everyones goals r so different I jst wanted a clue as to how to base mine off of. Of course I want to be healthy, but I also do not want to still b considered overweight!! I didn't go through this big surgery to still be considered overweight and unhealthy, so my goal is to get the most out of it. If I knew all the answers I wld not b apart of this forum. I am sorry about ur friend, but I am not trying to b perfect, jst trying to be the best me that I can!!!!
