Alcohol!
Yesterday my aunt made Sangeria and it was looking so tasty I was tempted to try a little bit.
But of course I didn't....are any of you guys drinking alcohol or those lovely mixed drinks you see on the menu at restaurants? Have any of you got sick from drinking alcohol?
I don't want hard liquor or anything like that but a Sangeria with wine in it was making me feel like I crawled through a hot African Dessert and needed something to help me!
I did keep drinking my water though.

My surgeon recommended waiting a year before drinking alcohol. When I finally decided to try drinking I drank maybe two ounces of champaigne during a toast and felt so drunk. I did not drink again after that for a few months. The fruity mixed drinks, bottled malt drinks, etc. sometimes make me dump and I am drunk MUCH faster than I was before surgery so I don't drink often and when I do I am either at home or make sure my husband is sober to drive. Your surgeon should have given you guidelines for when you can introduce alcohol. I highly recommend being at home the first time you drink any alcohol because you do not know how your body will react.

Drink your water instead.
No temperance lecture but best to stay away from alcohol since one you risk a transfer addiction and secondly while you are in ketosis, rapid weight loss, you are taxing the hell out of you liver already. No sense making it work any harder than it all ready it is. If you do indulge be at home and try your first alcohol there to find out how it will affect you.

Never, and I mean NEVER, trust a fart!!
Hi,
I am not sure when you had your surgery, but you need to be careful with alcohol for a couple of reasons. Alcohol can affect you differently after surgery than it did before surgery. Also, there is the chance of causing a transfer addiction. Alcohol turns into sugar in your body and is basically like drinking empty calories. So if you are in the weight loss stage of the journey, it is best to avoid alcohol.
With that being said, I am two and a half years out of surgery and I do drink alcohol on occasion. My philosophy has been 'everything in moderation' is okay. I am able to enjoy a glass of wine or a mixed drink (made with SF Crystal lite) now and then with no problems.
As far as those lovely drinks on the menu at the restaraunt......BE CAREFUL, most are loaded with sugar!! They look so pretty, but they typically are loaded with sugar and could cause you to dump.
Take care,
Nan

Liquor is liquor. It doesn't matter if it is "the hard stuff", wine or beer.
What does your surgeon recommend? You should discuss with your surgeon/nutritionist first so they can monitor your health.
Remember many of us got this way because we have addictive peronalities. You don't want to swap an addiction for food to an addiction to alcohol. It is a slippery slope I have decided I don't want to be on. I had this surgery for health reasons.

I do drink every couple of weeks. My guilty pleasure is wine. Does it slow my weight loss? Probably. Do I have to be very careful with 2 glasses of wine? Heck yes.
My doctor friend prepared a drink for me that wasn't bad that made me feel like I was having a fruity ****tail with no sugar. Campari, Gin, Vermouth and a splash of squeezed blood orange. Called a negroni.
If you are going to partake, I would start at home and with a loved one around to make sure you are okay and safe.

Duke did a study a while back on post rny and alcohol. They found that we get drunk (above .08 blood) in about 20 minutes on only 4 oz of wine and stay drunk for about 2 hours. So we get drunk much faster and stay drunk longer. My surgeon said no alcohol for at least a year and preferably longer. Its hard on the liver too and it doesn't need more stress.
There have been sufficient warnings about addiction transference and empty calories, so I'll skip that. I had my first drink at about 3 months out and I enjoy a drink or two every now and then. I stay away from beer (carbonation is not my friend) and those lovely mixed drinks you see on the menu (bc of the sugar). I did try sangria once and dumped. It depends on who makes it and how bc some places add sugar or soda along with all the fruit and wine. I stick to wine or vodka mixed w/something sugar free.
There really is no good reason to drink, especially when you are trying to lose weight, but this is life and sometimes you just want to enjoy a ****tail (responsibly).

I decided that this was going to be a lifetime, lifestyle change and gave up alcohol before surgery. One year after surgery I had a glass a wine and wanted to keep drinking the next day, but haven't had a drink in the year since. I am no longer a drinker- at all and I'm more than happy.
I get my rush from exercising and loving my new life...I even go to bars and clubs sober with no problem. I don't know why people think that just because it's legal to put poison in your body...that you should. My body is my temple and I no longer feel the need to stuff it full of things that tra****
Plus, I know waaaaay too many post-ops who have become alcoholics and I don't want to be a part of that statistic!
There are some that are able to drink, without incident, but again...I just don't see the point...our bodies don't need it or want it- it's just our heads that do.
