Help - I feel ... Icky

I've put of this post for a few days b/c I just cant figure the words to say...

But I feel icky.

I'm at about a month and a half and was having AMAZING success with eating and getting my protein. Then all of a sudden, my stomach feels weird ... maybe like too much acid, I have a hard time eating more than 1-2 oz at a meal and the thought of protein shakes makes me shutter.

I know not getting my protein is not an option and I'll admit I'm not getting enough fluids. But I feel like everything I put in my mouth will either come back out on it's own merit or because I get so grossed out I want to puke thinking about it.

What should I do? I don't think it's a stricture or anything, but what can I take for acid since I can't get to my stomach proper anymore?

Thanks!!

I'm sorry that you are not feeling well. Did your doctor put you on any type of antiacid before or after surgery? My doctor put me on Prolisec the month prior. I am also required to take it the first two months post surgery. It seems to be working. I would suggest that you share this information with your doctor's office and let them assist you. Wishing you well!

You can try something like OTC prilosec..just be patient, it takes time to reach full effect. If you feel it might be more of a gassy full feeling, try gas-X prior to meals. You are still healing, and unfortunately the pouch gets attention when angry. I felt that way too at about 2-3 months post op, and the gas X helped a lot. If you feel it's getting worse, or not controllable, please call your MD for advice..even though we're coming up on a holiday, there's always someone on call. I hope you feel better soon. Try warm decaf teas, drinks prior to eating, could help your pouch to relax for the meal.

I know the feeling. My stomach isn't acidy but I don't want to eat. All food makes me sick to my stomach. Ask your Dr for a rx of prilosec or protonix. It should help with the acid. If your already on one ask to get a higher dosage.

The EXACT same thing happened to me! I told my surgeon and he treated me as if I had an ulcer, prescribing carafate and something for nausea (I was already taking prilosec). The carafate coats your stomach and it was so amazing I got instant relief from the acidic symptoms and my nausea was so reduced I didn't have to take the nausea meds. I could get in more food and protein where even the thought of eating make me wretch before.

After a month on carafate 4 x day, I felt MUCH better but still felt acidic and nauseated when I missed a dose and noticed the symptoms increasing in the evenings. My doc prescribed another month of carafate and changed me from prilosec 1 x day to protonix 2 x day...MUCH better.

I recommend that you explain your symptoms to your doc and if he/she doesn't put you on carafate and a ppi, ask for it!

I had the same thing in my early days.   My doc gave me Prevacid Solu-Tabs and I've been taking it every since.  Never had a problem again!  It took a few days for the Prevacid to reach full effect.

Yeah, I agree with everyone else, call your doc and ask for a script for something for stomach acid.  If that doesn't seem to be helping after a week or so, call your doc back.  He can order some tests to find out if you have an ulcer or anything like that.  For the next few days, until the medication kicks in, make sure you get some protein in but if it's a little less than you usually get, that's OK.  You don't want to be low on protein for very long, but a few days won't hurt you at all.

Please note: I AM NOT A DOCTOR.  If you want medical advice, talk to your doctor.  Whatever I post, there is probably some surgeon or other health care provider somewhere that disagrees with me.  If you want to know what your surgeon thinks, then ask him or her.    Check out my blog.

My surgery was August 9th and I was moving along nicely.  My surgeon had me taking the prilosec but I hit a spot were I was just squirrelly everyday.  Then I was sent to a gastro and he went in Saturday and found that I had a staple that was blocking my progress.  He removed it and the feeling went away.  This is day 3 and I am going back to work tomorrow a new person.  It was a night a day relief.  I am still taking the meds the coat my stomach while it is healing but my nausea is gone.  I couldn't drink or eat I always felt too full.  This is my situation but I am so thankful that my surgeon sent me to the most wonderful gastro specialist or I would still be suffering.  This was very frustrating for me.  We are at the exact time out.  Just a thought.  Hang in there.
