Hot tea. We shouldnt do black? Hmmm

Im 6 months out, just emailed my nutricionist to ask about hot tea. Ever since it got cool outside, I can drink up to 4 cups of tea a day. I do have a favorite, its regular, black tea(Twinings Irish Breakfast). Ive always been bad about my 64 oz of fluids a day, I have NEVER done that in the last 6 months and Im ok. I do get regular check ups every 3 months, blood work is fine, weight is fine(lost 78 lbs so far). So anywho, I though finally, if I can have at least 4 cups of tea a day at 8oz each, Im getting half my daily intake of fluid. So my nutrciounist emailed me back and said that regular black tea doesnt count as fluid because it has caffeine in it, and will dehydrate me(mind you, it never has) and also that black tea is bad for us because it can cause kidney stones and I should drink green tea. I actually got super upset. Here I thought Im drinking, enjoying and doing good but nope. Has anyone heard of anything like this about tea? I really cant stand green tea, its like drinking ho****er, so tasteless.

My husband who is 14 months out of RNY did alot of research and there are brand new studies now show that caffeine, even in coffee does NOT dehydrate you. He drinks about 20 oz of regular coffee a day.

There is research that shows that caffeine does not cause dehydration.

However, it may contribute to the development of ulcers and it does interfere with the absorption of some minerals, including calcium.  I drink a ton of iced tea, but usually make decaf.

I've never heard of black tea causing kidney stones, but that doesn't mean it doesn't, I've just not heard of it.  I imagine you could research that easily enough.

My personal opinion is that it's probably OK in moderation, like most things are.

I'm wondering why your nutritionist says you should avoid the caffeine in black tea but thinks the caffeine in green tea is OK?

I actually prefer my tea unsweetened, but when I need a sweetener for something, I usually use Splenda.

I was told to avoid all caffeinated beverages., because of the ulcer chance. I drink decaf, regular tea, green tea, chai tea and coffee. I also make my own brewed decaf ice tea, only because I can't stand the lemon flavoring in most powder decaf ice tea.
Of course I was told this before I got my lap band 5 years ago, so I've been decaf for 5 years.

I drink herbal tea....and like you I can drink my entire 64oz of fluids as JUST herbal tea.  My NUT tried the same "it doesn't count" speech but at some point logic has to prevail.  My herbal tea is caffeine free and sugar free (I sweeten with splenda" so how is that any different from the crystal light packets that she tells EVERYONE to use to help drink more water?  She got this glazed over deer in headlights look and couldn't answer that one.

Now, if you look at the caffeine content of black tea vs coffee...black tea usually has LESS caffeine than decaf coffee...and like Kelly mentioned, it doesn't cause dehydration like some people think.  I'd take that recommendation with a grain of salt.

Agree....like many of the recommendations, one has to decide if it's
something that makes sense and works for them. I drink black tea,
1 or 2 teabags each day. I've done it for years and it doesn't bother me
in the least. I'm careful with caffeine but I've never consumed much
coffee and still don't, but I won't hesitate to have a Starbucks latte of
some kind now and then....again, not bothersome (single shot).
I think these "general" one size fits all "rules" lend themselves
to being evaluated by each of us, because I'm certainly not a
One size fits all person.  Maybe caffeine and black tea bother
somebody, but it's not me.

I despise the taste of coffee and like you, I LOVE my dark, black Irish Breakfast hot tea.  Or Tazo Awake...a Venti from Starbucks.  With milk, no sugar.  Since surgery, I've only had one cup as a treat.  The decaffienated just does not taste the same at all, and I've tried several brands.   I got the caffeine warnings about dehydration and malabsorption of calcium, so I decided to play it safe while in weight loss mode.  They didn't mention kidney stones.   I do miss it though.

Hello, my name is Rhonda and I am addicted to tea!

I love to drink double bergamot earl grey tea. I could be drinking pop, but I'm not. My doctor suggested that you could use 1 tea bag for 2 cups of tea. I try and get in my water as well, when I was trying to quit tea I had just ho****er every 2nd cup, so if I had a cup of tea I didn't have a 2nd cup till I had water (either hot or cold).
