Elevated Liver enzimes
I had horribly elevated liver enzimes at 7-10 months. After ruling out gallbladder (don't have one) and a wild gallstone that may have been caught in my ducts around my liver (ultrasound proved that false), I went online to research what the cause might be. Now, this may not apply to you, but I have a never ending sweet tooth and used Splenda like it was going out of style. So I googled "splenda elevated liver enzimes" and came up with a LOT of information of this happening to others. It definitely doesn't happen with everyone, but some people who use the product a lot could have this happen. I decided to do my own study of this and switched to Truvia for a month and did the blood tests again. Turns out my enzimes were NORMAL after going up consecutively for 3 months in a row. I will admit I now use a combination of Truvia and Splenda. I know when I'm using too much Splenda when my chest and neck start to itch which is a side effect of the elevated enzimes.
Hope this helps!

Hi Christine , thank you for your reply , I thought it might be the Splenda or any other artificial sweetener. Everything seems to have some sweetener. I will definately be careful not to injest any such thing from now on and see what happens. I also had an itchy arm one night it drow me crazy. Thanks again. Katarina.
I had extremely high liver enzymes about 3 months after my RNY. My PCP was puzzled because I did not have a gall bladder and at the time was not in pain. He scheduled an CT Scan for Monday. Over the weekend I began experiencing severe pain. I went to the emergency room. A stone was stuck in my bile duct. I ended up with pancreatitis and was in the hospital for about a week.
I too had elevated LFTs after surgery. My PCP couldn't figure out whey they kept elevating higher and higher each week she did labs. I was referred to a GI doctor who sent me for a MRCP MRI which came back normal. 2 weeks ago he sent me for a liver biopsy. I have been diagnosed with Primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC). They say it's not related to the surgery but I guess you never know. I did have Fatty Liver prior to surgery which I had to get on track before they'd approve my surgery. To be safe, you should get a GI referral so he/she can order the proper tests and rule things out. Good luck to you!
I completely agree with the others that you need to make sure and get everything checked out. You don't want to chalk it up to Splenda when it could be something else. I went through a battery of tests to make sure it wasn't something serious and then tried the switch to Truvia.
Take care!!

Thank You for your replys I will definately be surching for diagnosys with my problem. I never had any problems with my liver in the past and I don't abuse or drink any alchohol so this was a huge surprise to me. I live in Canada and have acces to health care so there is no way I'll not take good care of this. I was wonderin if it is chirrosis of the liver what treatment were given ? GI does that mean an doctor on internal medicine? My family doc is somewhat lax about the testing she said to see her again in 3 month I will not leave it to that.
Leap.......Primary Biliary Cirrhosis or PBC is not the type of Cirrhosis you normally hear about - it's not alcohol related. PBC is irritation and swelling (inflammation) of the bile ducts of the liver, which blocks the flow of bile. This obstruction damages liver cells and leads to scarring called cirrhosis. The cause of inflamed bile ducts in the liver is not known. The disease more commonly affects middle-aged women. Long-term bile obstruction is believed to lead to liver cirrhosis. The disease may be associated with autoimmune disorders such as Celiac disease, Hypothyroidism, Raynaud's phenomenon, Sicca syndrome.

I have had an elevated liver panel since August. I had to go off of some of my Rheumatoid Arthritis medication because of this. I was also diagnosed with low thyroid (Hypothyroid) in September and I am now on Armour Thyroid. I am without insurance for November & December so I am not able to see the doctor until January.
