Nervous, excited, emotional..not sure!
Hi! So I started this journey a couple months ago, and was SUPER excited. (I know 3 people first hand who have had this surgery done, and all came out of it with flying colors, no complications, and great results!)
After I went to the info session I walked out of there telling myself that I'm not sure if I can do this..now I have the rest of my appointments set, and I plan on going to them all...but there could be a huge possibility that I back out at the last minute. Just the thought of POSSIBLY dieing scares the hell out of me (I have 2 girls, aged 5 1/2 & 2 1/2,), and I can't imagine them without me! So a part of me thinks I am being selfish for even considering the surgery, but another part of me is saying to DO IT! I weigh 240lbs, and have been told I am low risk as I have NO other health problems besides for being overweight.
I'm not sure what to do!!! :(:(:(
Any info anyone could give me would be great, anyone around the same weight as me with any info?

Which will give you the best chance of a long happy life with your kids? I believed I had a better chance of a long happy life if I had surgery than if I didn't, even though there are risks with any surgery. It was a greater risk if I stayed obese.

I'm on board with Kelly. Was I scared of complications and the risk of death from having this surgery? Sure. Even though there is more risk of dying from having a knee replacement surgery than bariatric surgery.
But then I knew without a doubt that I would meet an early grave if I didn't have the surgery and remained obese.

Hello fellow Canadian ! I had the same fears, as at the time I had my surgery I was caring for an elderly parent - the fear of not being able to take care of her if something happened. I believe that the risk of us staying obese far out weighs the risks of surgery. This is coming from someone who needed a revisional surgery 6 weeks after the first one. I underwent the knife twice in 6 weeks and did just fine. Yes some of us have complications like I did, but there are complications from being obese as well. Think of how awesome it will be to be able to be physically active with your girls? To be an example of fitness and health? The years you are adding to your life !
If things freak you out so much that you may cancel following through with it, maybe consider a band instead. The risks are lower. But weight loss is slower. I shared your fears prior to surgery as well. I like the fact that you are going into it with eyes open and know the risks. The nice thing is... you will have a wait for your surgery date - you have time to make this decision.

That is a very good way at looking at it, and I have been looking at it that way...but also on the other end as well.
No, I don't want a band, I have researched it. I am guessing my surgery date will be set for late March, Early April.
I can't believe you you had 2 surgeries in 6 weeks! Why did you need to have the revisional surgery, if you don't mind me asking?

My story is long and it is best to read in my profile. My situation I hear is rare and I do not want it to add to your anxiety.
I did not have a straight forward RNY, there was a ring put around my pouch as well. This procedure is known as a FOBI. My first surgeon was in Mexico and this is the type of procedure he did. In my case, something happened with the ring and I do not know the medical term for it, but to me it sounds like an obstruction of some sort. It twisted or something. Basically nothing was going in the pouch, not even tiny sips of water. We had to go in and remove the ring. My second surgeon who I consulted to do this Dr. Adam Naaman (who is an Angel) (I did not wish to return to Mexico in my condition) also put my intestinal bypass back as close as they could get it. It will never be the same obviously. I was bottoming out with my blood sugar as well and since so much was happening and they had to go back in anyway, we decided to do it. At this point I was in rough shape, this was a life saving surgery.
I want to stress that my sort of complication can not happen with a straight forward RNY. There are few surgeons out there in comparison who do a FOBI, I think they are primarily in Los Angeles. I have heard that Randy Jackson from American Idol had a FOBI. I am not blaming the FOBI procedure for this. If I could now have something to avoid my pouch from stretching.... I would welcome it. I know a lot of people who had this surgery done through my surgeon and have a Fobi and are thriving... they seem to struggle less with weight gain as their pouch is not stretching.
I still have pouch restriction and malaborption . I supplement to a smaller degree.
