had to take my son to the dr. today. he has a bad cold. but he had also been have left side pains up high so we had an xray done and he is very very constipated. he has also been messing on him self alot. i know thats not normal. so i took him back to his old drs. office. they gave me a new laxitive to try with him plus the mirilax every other day. i really hope he feels better soon cause he is so backed up that after he eats he feels like or does puke. Damn school nurse called me yesterday evening and told me she thought Tre' was over eating alot at school cause he had got sick the past 2 days. First day I picked him up early the second day she didnt call until it was time to pick him up. She ****** me off at times. Any ways keep my lil man in your thoughts and prayers. Anyone else have kids with this issue ?

Oh my gosh. My three year old has been struggling with constipation CONSTANTLY for probably the last .. two years. It's been horrible. We did do an XRay, and the doctor called to confirm, yup - she's full of poop. Which kinda made me giggle, but at least I knew she wasn't bunched up or had other intestinal issues.

We did small doses of Miralax, and that quickly stopped working, so we did more, and then added Senokot and that quickly stopped working. We did extra fluids, backed off on milk, removed fruit, added fiber to EVERYTHING she ate .. you name it, we did it.

We ended up on two full capfuls of Miralax twice a day, which is a TON! The stomach cramps she'd end up with were horrible, and I'd cry along with her. Her poor belly would be HUGE. She's a tiny girl, and her belly would be big, hard and swollen. It was awful.

The final solution that seems to work for her? Fiber gummies. I know it's crazy, and I never would have imagined it myself. However, she eats two with breakfast and two with dinner and I push her fluids during the day, and she does great. If she goes more than two days without a BM, I give her three fiber gummies and three pedia-lax. That seems to get her back to normal so we can go back to maintenance. Finding something to keep things regular is sooo important! Miss a day and it throws her system out of whack.

When she got truly backed up, like it sounds like your son is, and the Miralax stopped working, and the Senokot stopped working, we went with a pediatric enema. I don't know how old your son is, and I know my daughter was highly against the concept, as I was in having to administer it, but it works darn quick. The enemas are well lubricated, so it's not painful, just uncomfortable, and you have to be careful not to push too hard, but there's safety mechanisms so you know just how to do it. I can get it in and out in about five seconds. I hate hate hate hated having to do it, but it was a way to get things moving safely and quickly and without too much pain. She'd usually have a movement within about thirty minutes, and we could do one a day, and it'd sometimes take a few days to get everything out.

Amazing how much poop a child can contain. Seriously.

Sorry for the lengthy post! Been there, done that, should have got the t-shirt and feel for both you and your son. I hope he gets better soon!

When my daughter was about 4 we had the exact same problems. Took her to the childrens hospital in Chicago to see a top pediatric gastro doc. They did every test under the sun including colonoscopy, EGD, barium swallow, etc. We tried Miralax, Senekot S, metameucil, etc. what really helped when she got really backed up is 2 tbsp of light Caro Syrup mixed in 1/2 cup juice.

We also eliminated bananas from her diet totally and put her on lactose free milk. This seemed to help immensely with only 1-2 episodes a month. She is almost 15 and to this day bananas make her sick and she still has to drink fat free or 2% lactose free milk. although she isn't technically allergic to bananas they constipate her horribly and usually make her vomit. She doesn't have any issues with cheeses or yogurts unless its large amounts.

I wish you the best of luck! I know it took us 3 doctors and almost a year to get it figured out. Find a specialist if you can.

Have a grown daughter who suffered horribly as a little one. She was
preemie and the doctors just kept yelling at me to give her more fruit.
Now honestly!  At 5 she was the size of a 2-year old and if I fed her any
more fruit, she wouldn't have eaten anything else at all!  Nothing her docs
suggested helped....nothing.  What helped is cutting the "fibers" off bananas,
which she loved. She also couldn't drink cow's milk so she had soy and
we grew a huge garden so she had lots of fresh veggies all the time. She
drank 4 oz of prune juice every morning and night, and had stool softeners
and a spoonful of ground flax every day. That all helped 1000 times more
than anything Western medicine had to offer. I'm grateful that she has either
outgrown it, or has learned to manage it with eating lots of grains and
veggies....but it was horrible at the time.  Good luck and use your instinct.
A naturopath may also be able to help.
