Sphincter of Oddi Dysfunction

I have this very painful condition called Sphincter of Oddi Dysfunction (SOD).  I read that GB can cause SOD.  I was wondering if there is anyone out there that has this and if they had it before surgery or just developed it after surgery.

You can get this anytime its not specific to WLS patients. Usually they can do a sphincterotomy to stretch it via a scope down the throat(endoscopy or ERCP).

I had SOD before my surgery in 2007, have not had any problems since that surgery. I had WLS in December and I am doing great.

I have not had my surgery yet (March 6th is the day) and I actually had symptoms before my gallbladder was removed.  I had a 2-3 year stretch before I was diagnosed where I literally wanted to die because of the pain I was in and the hospital stays, dehydrations, you know all the yucky stuff.  I am now doing relatively well with my symptoms, but when I read that SOD can be caused by RNY I started worrying that my symptoms may return in full force.  I am happy to hear that your symptoms have resolved.  It makes me very hopeful.  Thank you for responding!

I know this is digging up a couple month old post, but I was recently diagnosed with it.
Had RNY in 2010. A year later had Gallbladder removed (2011) because it was full of stones
then about 4-5 months ago I begin getting vage symptoms...
Very PALE stools (almost white)
Constant nausea
Extreme fatigue
Some "soreness" on the RT side but NO severe pain at all. (On a scale of 1-10 maybe a 1?)
But my Lab values (ALT/AST and Bilirubin) were all 9 times the normal level!

Doctors ran every "liver" test under the sun (Hepatis, Chirrosis, etc) and everything came back NORMAL (except for the high AST/ALT extra LOW White blood cells and HIGH Bilirubin).  My bariatric surgeon sent me to a GI specialist who thinks it is SOD (Oddi dysfunction) and wants to do the stent and Endoscopy and what not.

I'm just curious if EVERYONE has pain? (as a symptom?) See, I'm really doubting whether it is SOD, because I don't have pain. (Severe diarrhea, yes...Pale stools, yes, constant nausea, check) BUT even when my Gallbladder went kaput (and it was full of stones and dying) there was NO pain! (in fact the technician was like unbelievable...."Are you SURE you are not having pain??? Are you POSITIVE??"  Yes lady, I know what pain is like! It's just nausea, a feeling of "unwell" really off the wall labratory liver values and extreme fatigue!)

Waking up from the GB removal surgery, I had EXTREME pain then, and I was screaming.  Like Lady Lithia, I am really wondering if I want to go through PAIN to have them look for what they believe is SOD disease?  But all my doc's are really worried about my weight loss (A lot, and unintentional at this point. I look like a skeleton), my labs that are climbing higher and higher.
I am just worried about the constant diarrhea and extreme fatigue.

My symptoms just don't MATCH the Sphincter of Oddi description as far as pain (Never had it with the GB either)???

Help?
Warmly,
Jackie

My wife had RNY in 2005, and in 2007 started having attacks of pancreatitis.  The surgeon had removed her gall bladder during the RNY, but they thought that there was "sludge" in the bile ducts.   After five years of this, with multiple times in the hospital, we found a surgeon to do a bariatric-assisted ERCP.  She almost dies from the pancreatitis after that (in late 2012).  She has never fully recovered.

I had my gastric bypass 8 years ago.  Off and on, I have ended up in the hospital in severe pain.  Finally, last year, my gastroendorologist(sp) decided that I had Oddi Dysfunction.  I had surgery last July 2013 and, so far, have had no more problems.  The symptoms I had were, severe pain right below the sternum, severe dehydration, and highly elevated liver enzymes (over 600).  This led to pancretitis.   My gastric bypass surgeon was in my surgery to open the holes so that the gastro doctor could go to the sphinter and slice it so that it was open.  It had atrophied.  I have not, so far, had any more problems.  I just want to know if I am considered to have pancreatic or liver problems.  Are my liver and pancreas considered normal or do I have problems with either when filling out medical forms.
