Quick question for a newbie: Walking???
RNY on 03/26/12
Hello!
I would like to know how much walking should I be trying to get in daily? I am one week out. My doc told me to do as much as I can but not overdo it. For me, that can mean anything. What should I be trying to do at this time? Thanks!

I didn't do much walking because of an injured knee that I had surgery on 2 months after my bypass. Other than going to bathroom, I did try to walk 5-15 mins 3-4 x day. Because you've had major abdominal surgery, you will need to build up the time/frequency as tolerated, but don't feel the need to push yourself too much the first few weeks. They do want you up and moving (not lying in bed all the time) to keep your blood flowing and prevent complications like blood clots or pneumonia. How your body feels the next day is an indicator of whether you overdid it or not. Other exercising shouldn't start until you're 6 weeks out, when your body has healed from surgery. Enjoy your journey!

I would try to walk as much as possible. For example, if you are trying to sip a certain amount each hour, you might have a cup with the right amount, and always get up to get more. Move move move. I think it's really a great plan. I didn't move much (extenuating cir****tances) but I wished at the time that I could I was goign stir crazy being unable to do much walking.
The more you move, the better it will be for your circulatory systems and it starts you off on yoru adventure best!
