I'm having my surgery tomorrow afternoon and I need to hear some good recovery experiences!  I have so much going on this month- starting school and moving that I am trying to hard to think positive and that everything will go smoothly.
Please tell me there's some of you out there that didn't have a rough recovery?  That didn't end up back in the hospital?
I just need some encouragement! I'm so nervous!!!

So far, so good here.Surgery was Thursday morning and I went home Friday night. No problems getting in fluids... I'm currently past 60oz so far today and still sipping. No nausea. And my energy is increasing daily- Saturday took 2good naps, Sunday 1, today only sat down for a little while in the afternoon! Cooked dinner for family Sunday, today cleaned cupboars &I shopped, altered my son's school pants, did a load of laundry and a sink full of dishes, etc, etc.
I too was worried about how long I would be "down" because I'm usually on the go constantly.
Try to get a good night sleep before going in because sleep in the hospital is a joke! They wake you up to check your vitals and offer you pain meds.... HELLO! I was SLEEPING! NO PAIN MEDS NEEDED! Lol
Seriously it was so much better than I expected! And keeps getting better.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery!

I was off narcotics by the end of the day of surgery and released the day after.   The next day my husband was back to work and I was driving my 13 year old to a golf lesson and looking after my 11 month old.

I had no pain and no problems at all - still perfectly fine 8 years later!

I am certainly no Superwoman but have never had any problems after any surgery ...  I think I am probably more the norm than what you read on this forum which is where people come to vent and air their difficulties!

I had surgery on a Wednesday and went home on Friday AM.  I was on a morphine drip (one of those you click when you need it gizmos) through about Thursday evening at the hospital, but they took me off it because they said "Since this AM, you've clicked it 6 times."  I said, "Is that a lot?" They laughed and said "The lady next door has clicked it 162 times since this AM".   They gave me 40 oxycontin to use there and after I went home.  I have 35 of them left.  I took it only before I planned to go to bed, more because I didn't want to find I was in pain and couldn't sleep than because I actually felt pain.

I was sore and uncomfortable getting up and down, but it was very manageable. The worst part of recovery for me was the first few hours after waking up.  I hadn't realized how awful I would feel. But it wasn't pain...it was nausea, weakness and disorientation from the anesthesia. When it I wore off, (by evening)  I was fine. Then the only bad thing f was not being able to have anything to drink for the first 24 hours or so...just sponges that I could moisten my mouth with.

I slept in bed, not a recliner right from the get go, though I kept my knees propped up.  I was eating plain greek yogurt (with splenda and vanilla extract) by Friday when I got home. And protein shakes.

Within two weeks I was eating homemade pureed soups, mashed potatos and anything I could cut into really small pieces and chew down to mush....soft pieces of chicken, tuna, yogurt with some fruits in it, chili, etc.

I've had a few experiences of the "foamies", when I've either eaten too much or too fast and haven't chewed enough. Typically resting for about 10-15 minutes is enough for it to go away..
Otherwise...no dumping, no complications, no bad reactions to any particular foods.

We often think most people's experiences are bad, because those whose experiences ARE bad are usually the ones who talk about it/post about it because they need reassurance or suggestions. But the large majority have an experience more like mine.  So don't be nervous and keep your eye on the goal!

I think you have to keep in mind that for every horror story, there are about 50 people who don't have any issues. I'm not going into surgery tomorrow expecting the worst. Rather, I'm going in with a clear mind about how this will benefit me in the long run. No need to get worked up over some things that may never happen to you, IMO.

Good luck, and see you on the losers' bench! :)

6 weeks today.
In hospital 2 nights.  They said I could go home after night 1, but I wanted the drain out before going home.
1 day of diarrhea in the first week.
1 evening of "dry heaves" the week after that.
1 additional episode where I lost my lunch.
1 day where everything seemed to cause gas.
All other days have been fine.
No post-surgical pain from the wound area (now totally healed)

Best of all, LOST 47 pounds from my high pre-op weight (about 10 weeks ago)!
(About 30 of that is post-op)
