Protein Supplements - Yuck!!

I'm 5 days post op and already can't stand the taste of the protein supplement. I purchased from GNC a brand called Gold Standard 100% whey in chocolate and even though I "doctor" it up, it is becoming quickly unpallatable. I don't know how I'll be able to get much of it down for two weeks!!! I had a sample of the Unjury and that wasn't much better. Can anyone give me some suggestions? I kind of feel like if I can hang on until my post-surgery follow-up on the 21st where I can start adding soft foods then I might make it but I know I'm not getting near enough the protein that I should. I can only get about 2oz down at a time right now. I'm keeping other fluids, water and crystal light, up and feel I am well hydrated. I just wish I could find a protein drink that's actually drinkable. Any suggestions would be great!!

If you have a Smoothie King near try their Gladiator vanilla. 2 scoops 190 calories 45 protein 0 sugar. Pretty good.

Try GNC Lean Shakes.  I can't do straight whey protein either.

They will probably let you taste them in the store before you buy them, that's what I did.  I didn't care for the strawberry at all.  I get the Chocolate and Vanilla ready to drink ones; they are the only shakes I use.

Muscle Milk (170 calorie ones) and Ensure High Protein shakes had too much sugar in them, but that is what I started off on since they are not whey protein.

J.Robb sells an egg protein powder too at Vitamin Shoppe in sample sizes, but I haven't tried that.

Hope this helps!

Thanks so much for the replies. I'll have to try the Smoothie King and the GNC Lean Shakes. I did come up with a home recipe today that's pretty good but it's still pretty low on the protein side. I was able to drink 4 of them today but each drink is only about 9 proteins per 8 oz. So I got in about 36 total grams. Much better than I was getting in previous days which if I was lucky was barely 4 grams. So a great improvement. I think I'll get some of the Lean Shakes and try adding it to my homemade recipe to see if it's still palatable and can boost my protein intake.

Here's my recipe:

1/2 cup water
1/2 cup skim milk
2/3 cup dry powdered milk
1 tbsp SF Nesquik powder
Blend and pour over ice

I tried a vanilla flavor today by leaving out the Nesquik and adding 1/4 tsp of SF Orange Jello and it was pretty good.

Another question....I get the impression from other posts that RNY patients will drink protein drinks even after a long post op period. How long do you have to include a protein drink in your diet? My diet plan only includes them until about 6 wks out when at that time I should be back to normal food. Although, I realize that with my small pouch getting in 60 - 80 grms of protein a day may still be challenging but I hope I don't have to drink these for a lifetime.

I have never had protein shakes or bars. It is entirely possible to live supplement free - it just takes harder work as you don't have them to fall back on but in the long term it tends to make you eat better as you learn how to do this protein first eating from the beginning. I have NEVER had a protein deficiency and probably have better numbers than most!

Can I ask why you didn't do a cup of milk instead of half water/half milk? It would have increased your protein per shake????

Sin Kim,

I didn't do a full cup of milk because when I started trying this recipe, which is the same recipe my husband used for his post-op, I was experiencing alot of nausea and was experiencing some rather uncomfortable abdombinable pressure. I thought I wasn't able to tolerate the milk so soon after surgery so I thought I needed to drink a whey based supplement. The nausea and abdombinable discomfort turned out to be plain old constipation (TMI) but I thought I would ease myself back onto it to make sure I was tolerating it ok. Over the next few days, if everything continues to progress, I plan to increase the milk and decrease the water so it will increase the protein grams, but I just wanted to make sure I could tolerate it well first.

Constipation will get you every time LOL ...

I think you have an excellent plan, espcially if you are tolerating the milk at this stage - good luck!

You can get liquid protein without using the shakes if you don't like the flavor. Skim milk has 7 grams of protein in a cup. Add in FF nonfat powdered milk to double that. Then just add flavors you like....perhaps some coffee frozen into ice cubes and a little sf sweetener and blend to make a frapaccino with 14 grams of protein. Or add a half a frozen banana and some PB2 for peanut butter banana "shake".
