What can I take for a cold?? // How do I know if a medication is an NSAID?

Hello all-

This is my first cold season since having RNY. I know I can't take certain medications anymore, but am having trouble fully comprehending what I can and cannot take. I usually get a cold this time of year, and can feel it coming on. Can anyone help me to figure out what I can and can't take? I usually take Advil cold and sinus but I assume that's out of the question...Are any and all Advil products out of the question? What about any Tylenol products? Nyquil/Dayquil? Decongestants?

Also, what is the best general way to know is something is an NSAID? Is there something to look for on the package? Are NSAIDs the only no-nos?

Any help would be appreciated!

Do a simple Google search for NSAID medication list and you'll likely find multiple listings. I've seen 3 or 4 of them, but do not remember. If it's an anti inflammatory type drug, it's likely it's a NSAID. Advil is typicall oon the nono list. DAVE

Most anything with NSAIDS in them will say it on the back label. I recently was sick and went to buy some alka seltzer and I was shocked that it also had NSAIDS in it. I take tylenol products and nyquil and dayquil as needed. Just be sure to read all labels and double check! Hope you feel better soon. I'm just getting over a 5 week cold from hell!!

I was reading the back of my Alka Seltzer cold but it doesn't say NSAID...am I missing something?

Pretty much all pain relievers besides Tylenol (acetaminophen) are Nsaids. Aspirin, ibuprofen or aleve are all NSAIDS

There was a list online that had the medications you could and couldn't take. I cant find it!! I know Sudafed was ok to take. Any Tylenol product is ok. Hope this helps. Try googling "what cold medicines can you take after bypass surgery" and it will come up with some lists.

Tylenol and NyQuil products are both safe multi-symptom cold medicines. Others generally have ibuprofen or naproxen in them.

Sudafed (now available only from the pharmacy counter even though it is OTC) is safe for us, as are both cough medicines that are for cough ONLY.

Do NOT take Aleve or Advil cold preparations or anything for "aches and pains" other than the Tylenol or NyQuil/DayQuil
