Setting a goal weight..
This is probably a silly question- but I was wondering how you all went about setting your goal weight? I mean, I have some ideas that are rather nice- but I don't want to be silly and make unrealistic goals. I met with my Nutritional group on Monday(the first pre op meeting)- nothing was really covered on setting goals, other than setting goals are helpful. I'm about 5'8 and weight 280... anyone have an idea what would be a good goal? (Surgery will be end of April which is when I have a break from Radiology School)
I'm sorry if this is a silly question- I keep wanting to make my weight line thing on my page.. but I have no idea what I will be able to accomplish...
Thank you in advance for you help :)
I can only speak for me. I set my goal weight by identifying the upper weight range for "Normal" on the BMI chart for my height. I also set intermediate goal weights between my surgical weight and the ultimate goal, so that I can see the progress more easily and I feel like I'm reaching milestones. My first goal was under 300, the next one is 250 lbs. and the next one after that is 199 lbs.

Sounds like most of us are using the BMI chart to set our goal weight. I set my goal based on BMI as well. I decided that I would choose a weight that was in the normal range. I am 5' 3". So a normal BMI weight for me would be from 104 to 141. I figured 135 was a nice number. I want to see a Dr and not have the first words out of their mouth be " well you could use to loose a few pounds." If I go below my goal GREAT but I am currently just 13lbs short of my "goal" and 10 months out. My surgeons goal was 175lbs. Guess I showed him LOL
I didn't base mine on BMI at all - although getting to that number would be great. I based it on how I felt when I was at my lowest weight as an adult, both physically and self-confidence wise - and then picked a number just below that. My medical team is happy with the goal I set, even tho it is still above a "normal" BMI.

I am 5'6" and weigh 238.5. They set a goal weight of 130 and I am guessing that this is within the BMI chart and necessary for insurance to cover it. I do not ever remember being that thin. I think I was 140-145 in high school (and I was 5'7-1/2" back then). I believe that 130 would be very thin for me & I think somewhere in the 140-150 range is more appropriate. We shall see when I get there.
My daughter is also worried about me getting too thin. She is going to worry herself into problems because of the people we know. We know a few that had this and then ballooned back past their starting weight. We know a couple that got extreme eating disorders and had to be hospitalized for getting too thin and the gal who worked with my husband died (I don't think this was really because of the type of the surgery; more that general surgery risk.) I know these people too and I am still willing. I HAVE to get this band out, so while I am under, I might as well try the RnY as nothing else has worked.
I was never particularly overweight until my thyroid quit, I quit smoking and developed extreme fibromyalgia ~ all at the same time. Some of my meds help pack on the weight and I hope I am able to eliminate some of them eventually.
