To straw or not to straw....

I am almost 3 weeks out now and I am still not able to drink the right amount. My problem is that apparently I am an idiot drinker. I just can't seem to keep myself from swallowing a bunch of air whenever I take a drink. It makes me uncomfortable and sometimes I have a hard time trying to make myself burp. My surgeons office advocate the 'no straw' policy, saying that I causes a body to swallow too much air. WELL, that is already my freaking problem! I don't think that IF I do swallow air with a straw it could be much worse than it is now...

thoughts?

My surgeon took that part out and we are allowed to use a straw.  I use them all the time.  In fact I seldom take a drink without a straw.    I've had no issues at all.

Give it a try.  If it bothers you then stop doing it.

My doctor allows straws unless it makes you uncomfortable. He says some people actually gulp more air without than with them.

Thank you, glad I'm not the only idiot drinker.  It does get better and you will learn not to swallow air, or at least less air.  I am almost 8 weeks out.

Try it and see.  I use a straw pretty often and it doesn't cause any gas for me.

I can only tell you of my experience this past weekend--We spent 3 days at a local casino resort for our 45th wedding anniversary. We had comp breakfast buffets from the hotel but I took my shakes to have (I'm 5 months out BTW). I had asked for a glass of ice to put my shake in--got a large glass PACKED with shaved ice--only half of my RTD shake would fit in the glass and every time I tried to take a sip I got a huge mouth full of the shaved ice--well finally said to heck with it and grabbed a straw. I got about half the glass down and suddenly felt like I was going to EXPLODE. ! Got back to the room and I was so sick--I threw up all the rest of the day--I told my doctor about this yesterday and he said it was  probably because of the amount of air I got using the straw. If you are already having the problem without a straw perhaps it wouldn't affect you in the same way it did me--but believe me I'm not inclined to use a straw again in the near future !  devil

I use a straw with my favorite lidded cup and I am able to get all my water in pretty easily every day. No gas problems and no gulping, never been a problem. Good luck!

I find that I do better with a straw than without a straw.  I'm able to take in more liquids with a straw.

I just recently started drinking with a straw because of all of the foamy stuff I get on top of my protein drinks when I mix them.  Haven't had a problem with it yet
