To straw or not to straw....
I am almost 3 weeks out now and I am still not able to drink the right amount. My problem is that apparently I am an idiot drinker. I just can't seem to keep myself from swallowing a bunch of air whenever I take a drink. It makes me uncomfortable and sometimes I have a hard time trying to make myself burp. My surgeons office advocate the 'no straw' policy, saying that I causes a body to swallow too much air. WELL, that is already my freaking problem! I don't think that IF I do swallow air with a straw it could be much worse than it is now...
thoughts?
My surgeon took that part out and we are allowed to use a straw. I use them all the time. In fact I seldom take a drink without a straw. I've had no issues at all.
Try it and see. I use a straw pretty often and it doesn't cause any gas for me.

I can only tell you of my experience this past weekend--We spent 3 days at a local casino resort for our 45th wedding anniversary. We had comp breakfast buffets from the hotel but I took my shakes to have (I'm 5 months out BTW). I had asked for a glass of ice to put my shake in--got a large glass PACKED with shaved ice--only half of my RTD shake would fit in the glass and every time I tried to take a sip I got a huge mouth full of the shaved ice--well finally said to heck with it and grabbed a straw. I got about half the glass down and suddenly felt like I was going to EXPLODE. ! Got back to the room and I was so sick--I threw up all the rest of the day--I told my doctor about this yesterday and he said it was probably because of the amount of air I got using the straw. If you are already having the problem without a straw perhaps it wouldn't affect you in the same way it did me--but believe me I'm not inclined to use a straw again in the near future !
I find that I do better with a straw than without a straw. I'm able to take in more liquids with a straw.
