Question for any horsey folks with RNY....
I only started riding later in life, about 10 years ago, after losing over 60 pounds (started out lighter too, all found again +
) but I love this sport. Thank goodness I have a wonderful, kind, sturdy mare (clyde cross) but I haven't been on in the last little while since I injured my knee. Looking forward to my surgery, weight loss and feeling better.
All the best to you and your future riding!
I am 15 weeks out and didn't ride a lot before RNY but I am going to do the Western Pleasure Horse Shows this summer. My daughter (17) has a great WP horse that I bought and had trained for her. The mare is so sweet so I am going to ride her this summer. I haven bought myself a outfit to wear with all the glitz. Doesn't quite fit yet but getting closer every day. I was instructed by my daughter that I had to ride the way the horse is trained. I am hoping since she is trained so well that all I have to do is get on and look good!! LOL That probably won't be the case since I am not a great rider to begin with. This wls is opening many doors that I had shut myself years ago---I am enjoying the Ride (literally)!!!
Good Luck
Val
That's just a great thing to look forward to..riding and showing! I ride both in English and Western saddles (especially for trail riding) and just switched to a bitless bridle for my horse last year which she loves. I don't jump or go very fast, just riding for pleasure and some equitation. It was also my daughter that got me started in horses when she was younger, so I guess I caught the bug. I also belong to a great group of adult lady riders in my area who get together for clinics and lessons and social events, which really adds to the fun. Please let me know how it goes this summer!
All the best,
Karol
My doctor told me to wait 6 weeks because of the pulling that we sometimes have to do when the neck is still or if we are disengaging the hip. I also like to lunge a bit before I ride. I also have 2 clyde crosses, they were rescued from the premarin farms. Riding as a 179lb girl is way different from riding as a 351lb girl.
I have started some lunging too, while my knee is out of commission, just to keep my horse going . As you probably know, as a clyde cross she is a very easy keeper! I hope to have one of my friends ride her while I am off. for my RNY.
I think it will be much easier once the weight starts coming off me, especially for the mounting and dismounting, that's probably what I'm wondering about the most for after surgery - stress on the stitches and internal organs. Guess it's probably better to wait a bit longer, do other exercises and get fitter before trying that out?
So nice that you rescued your your horses - how old are they and what type of riding do you do?
Karol
