My surgeon has a list of herbs I cannot have post op. I don't really understand WHY and I forgot to ask.

The most important one of all, that I cannot have is....

GARLIC!!!!!

So I now ask, any idea why?

My Dr. Is REALLY Strict, compared to most peoples. and I have no herb restrictions what so ever. Sounds strange to me.

I would guess that is most likely because garlic is known to cause gas.

I have never heard of a restriction on garlic (or any other herbs).  Not only do I frequently EAT garlic, I also use garlic oil pills for the occasional upset stomach.

Ask the doctor why he has this restriction.

no clue and I thought my doc was strict! I don't know if I would of made the first couple of weeks of pureed, soft and reg food without garlic. It really calmed my belly when I tried new meats.

Garlic is GREAT for stomach upsets of various kinds.  My grandmother and mother always gave us garlic pills when we were ill (and that was before you could get them with chlorophyll to keep you form belching garlic for an hour afterward!) and I never had any kind of OTC treatment like Pepto Bismol until I was in college!

I love garlic and use it often, if you find out why let us know,

Garlic is a blood thinner so some surgeons ( of all specialties) restrict it in the immediate postop period. Why don't you ask the next time you see him? It would be interesting to know his reasoning.

I just had my surgery, and none of my classes ever mentioned that we could not consume certain herbs.   Also, my surgeon never mentioned it either.   I thinks it's totally bizarre, and I would get a second opinion.   The only caution I got was eating spicy foods.
