I'm waiting on approval for surgery. I called my insurance company today and they said it can take 6 to 8 weeks. Has anyone heard of someone having to wait that long for approval?

My insurance company gave me a bit of a run-around so at first it did take a while, but when I called they always had an answer for me within a few days. My guess is it won't take that long. It did help that I had a contact person to call. I don't know if they pushed it through to help me or to get rid of me, but once I had that person helping things went a lot quicker. Good luck!

I have no idea if this is applicable to all insurance companies or just the one I had -- or, now that I think about it, whether it is true at all, LOL --  but I was told they HAD to respond within 30 days.

i had a very high BMI so got my approval in 2 days.  Usually, the approval is MUCH faster if your BMI alone is high enough to qualify you for surgery.  It takes a little longer if they have to review documentation on comorbidities.

I personally don't know of anyone whose insurance company took more than 3 weeks.

The company I work for has to respond based on medical necessity of course within 30 days but it never takes that long unless information is missing or incomplete

I had to wait 6 weeks for mine. It got pretty frustrating. They kept telling me I would know in a few days, I would call back a few days later and get the same answer.  Then when I would call I would let them know I was writing down their name and the time we talked. Magically I had my answer in 2 days. approved :)

That sucks that you had to wait 6 weeks. I'm going crazy at just two weeks. I can't imagine having to go another month!

I work at a large well known insurance company and most insurance companies have a preferred response to allow 30 days for review. Most of the time as long as all the information is sent in and all the criteria is met then it doesn't take but about 2 weeks. It does take longer if they don't receive everything they need the first time around though. Honestly, allow 7-10 business days from the day they loaded the request and hopefully they will have a response.

Does it help to call them every few days?
