Having a rough time.....Need some Advice
Hello,
I am sorry about the long post.
I am having somewhat of a difficult time lately, since it is Saturday and I won't be able to call my surgeons office until Monday I thought someone on here might have gone through something similar.
Right after my RNY Gastric Bypass I felt amazing. I was able to get in all my fluids and medicine with no problem. About a week after surgery I came down with an ear infection and since then it feels like my body has rebelled and decided it hates me and doesn't want to do anything that will help it.
I was able to see the dr at my surgeons office that handles the post-ops. I was miserable. I know I was dehydrated and would constantly have dry heaves. I could not swallow anything without those heaves! He gave me some anti-nausea pills and those seemed to really help. That was this past Monday. On Wednesday I felt well enough to attend the support group meeting. I had not had any protein and decided to try a protein shake which made my stomach so upset and the dry heaves came back. I asked the nutritionist at the meeting and she suggested trying to get my protein for right now from things other than shakes.
I have been able to get meds in again and fluids down and was feeling back to my normal self these past couple days but still no protein intake. I decided to make a trip to Wal-Mart today to get some yogurt. As soon as I got to Wal-Mart my lower stomach started hurting and by the time I got home my lower stomach was aching, I felt dizzy, and my mouth was a desert. This led to more dry heaving. I did have a very large BM which I had not had since surgery. I laid down and slept for a few hours. Now my lower stomach is just sore. I am able to drink again and am not feeling nauseated.
Any advice on this? I do plan on calling the office on Monday to try and get an appointment or at least talk to someone about what has been going on.
I was taking some Miralax but all that came out was watery. Thank you for your response. I hope after tonight's episode I will finally be on the mend and be able to get protein in- that is something that has worried me a lot.
Thank you for your response. I don't want to regret this surgery but right now it is hard to remind myself of what I will accomplish when I feel yucky.
So sorry you have had such a rough go. But I noted that you seem to feel better since you had the large BM. Part of what was going on could be contributed to constipation. I would try getting the liquids and protein in again! Go slowly, use popsicles, SF jello, whatever works to help you with that. PUSH fluids though! Where are you on the stages? How about unflavored protein powder add to . yogurt, cottage cheese, soups etc. Get some powdered non fat milk and add that to anything and everything to increase the protein content. If you make SF FF pudding add some additional non fat powdered milk. Look at all the wonderful recipes for protein powders on the worldaccordingtoeggface or bariatricfoodie or any of the great blogsites. Pinterest has a wealth of WLS recipes.
If you are still nauseated, use the antinausea pills as they do help and you MUST get in liquids/protein or it becomes a self perpetuating cycle of dry heaves, nausea, vomiting.
Use something to keep from getting so constipated. I am now 7 months out so get a lot of fiber from my foods but still have to use stool softeners and miralax to prevent constipation.
Talk to your surgeon or whomever you see come next week about aids for the prevention of constipation. It is a HUGE and common problem with post op RNYers.
Good luck and glad you are starting to get better.
Thank you very much for your response. It does seem like a cycle already- 1 day I feel good and the next I am back to feeling awful. I should be on the soft food stage right now but really haven't ventured past full liquids more than twice (cream of mushroom soup and mashed cauliflower) I do have unflavored protein powder so I will try adding that to some SF pudding. I just bought some yogurt and string cheese to try too once my stomach isn't so sore.
There ya go! Sip sip sip if you must! I used ice chips a lot but I love cold drinks. A lot of the folks on here like warm drinks.... you can make tea or broth and then add your unflavored protein.
Add 1 scoop protein powder to warm water and stir it up. Slowly add warm to hot liquid to protein to avoid clumping!
Take the nausea meds. Just start all over again and you will do fine. You are doing fine. Just a lil hiccup. Feels rotten but seriously, watch those bowels! Get doc to write you a script for miralax ... it will not work fast but it will work over the course of a few days. Also, ask if you can use milk of magnesia. That helps a lot too and works fast.
Keep us posted and sip sip sip!
Feeling so much better today! Better than I have been in over a week! Who new being constipated could cause all of those problems :/ I feel like I am finally getting back to my normal self! I even tried some low fat string cheese last night and everything went fine, going to try some yogurt today. I never had constipation issues pre-op- it is definitely going to be something I am aware of from now on. I don't want to ever let it get as bad as it was yesterday.
I too have had that feeling of nausea and upset stomach, I do get constipated frequently. I have tried stool softners, milk of magnesia and sennakot as well as fiber pills. What seems to work the best for me is the stool softner Colace and sennacot laxative. I also try to make sure I get my fruit and vegetables in to make sure I get enough natural fiber. It is amazing how being constipated creates such trouble with feeling so sick to the stomach. Water is the best thing for the system, even fluids. Popsicles are a good form of liquids these summer days.
Good luck, you are not alone.
