pre-mixed shakes or powder? Which option did you enjoy better
I'm going to head to the grocery store today so I'm trying to get some opinions. Stage 1 of my diet for the first 2 weeks is the liquid stage. I was given a list of approved liquids including items such as slimfast and other premixed shakes (that I would add protein powder to). I have already purchased some sample packs of the powder mixes that I can mix with water, soy milk, or low fat milk. What did you prefer??? I know we are all different in how our taste and stomachs tolerates everything. I just wanted to see if maybe there was a majority agreement here. thank you for any advice in advance.
Oh yeah, and only 2 days left. SURGERY FRIDAY!!
The pre mixed shakes are certainly more convenient but I find the ones I mix myself end up tasting better. Most brands of protein powder I like best mixed with milk or soy milk, no****er. I often add additional things to them, like decaf instant coffee, to improve the flavor.

I prefer the premix shakes. I love the Premier brand. When using Slimfast remember to get the high protein. Samples are a great option because tastes do change. Good luck on your journey.
I bought pre-mixed premier protein shakes, as well as a bag of protein powder ( sorry, don't recall the brand) at Sam's club. The powder is definitely more cost effective, but I like the convenience of putting a ready to drink shake in a cooler bag and head out. Other liquids I consumed were crystal light, decafe iced tea, V8 juice, chicken and beef broth. Best of luck on your surgery, and a speedy recovery !
Hi, I'm 9.5 yrs post op. I was never much into sweets. After surgery (RNY),couldn't tolerate them at all. Now recently was attacked by onset of sweet craving, but still like my salties.
My all time favorite protein(I've tried many brands) is Unjury. It's only available from their website. I tried one of their samples when I went with my daughter to her pre-op appt. Unjury dissolves easily with a spoon/fork, no need for a shaker unless you are adding stuff or getting creative. HOWEVER, when I have a salty drink, I feel fed. Unjury has a Chicken Soup flavored powder that I love. My daughter spices hers up with seasonings, but I like it as is. They also have a "proteined cheese sauce" powder. My daughter adds it to food when cooking to sneak in more protein on the kids. Most unflavored powders taste like dry milk. As for store bought protein, the one I like best is at Wal-Mart. EAS comes powdered or in shakes. I like the strawberry shakes four pack for about 5.00. I dilute liquid shakes with skim milk because they are all so thick and rich. Unjury's unflavored only has a hint of milk taste on it's own, but is easily covered by what it's mixed with. I mix unflavored Unjury with water and Kool Aid unsweetened with Splenda and make popsicles. YUM! My other favorite drink is V8 juice with unflavored Unjury and some seasonings. Cold it's like Guspacho, warm it's like tomato soup.
I never could stand the taste or smell of protein powder mixed alone with milk or water. EXCEPT, that the Unjury Chicken Soup one is good! What I have found that works great for me, although it is expensive, is that I buy the Atkins premixed protein shakes and add a scoop of Unjury Unflavored powder to them. The shake alone is 15g protein and the powder is 21g per scoop, making the shakes (without other additives) 36g of protein! If I add PB2 or other source of protein for flavor, it only goes up. In the beginning I used two shakes a day...now I pretty much do one daily to supplement my protein intake. (I am just over 8 months out). I like the flavored ones for convenience, however, I will often but the french vanilla ones and then add things for flavoring to mix it up a little. For instance, last night I added some lemon extract and ice and blended it....it was yummy. One of my favorites is French Vanilla shake with Instant decaf coffee and a squirt of SF Chocolate syrup and ice...instant awesome coffee drink! Also adding SF chocolate syrup and a couple spoons of PB2, that is a great choc peanut butter shake. SF Strawberry jam and some banana is also yummy!! Sorry! I could go on and on!
What I have found is that whatever ones you use, put them in a cup with a lid and straw. This eliminates that odor that you will get with almost all of them (although I find my blend has much less). Good luck!! You will be GREAT!
