Feosol Carbonyl Iron - What are the rules
Talking with your doc is always a good idea, but unfortunately, they don't always give good advice about vitamins. For instance, I've had doctors tell me to take iron with four ounces of OJ and that would be enough vitamin C to help with absorption, which is not even close to enough.
Please note: I AM NOT A DOCTOR. If you want medical advice, talk to your doctor. Whatever I post, there is probably some surgeon or other health care provider somewhere that disagrees with me. If you want to know what your surgeon thinks, then ask him or her. Check out my blog.
Take it at least two hours away from calcium. A bunch of other stuff can interfere with iron absorption, too, like the tannins in tea, caffeine, and eggs, but calcium is the big one.
If you take it with vitamin C, that helps with absorption. You need 200 mg C for every 30 mg iron, so that would be 300 mg C with each 45 mg pill.
Carbonyl iron is a great supplement for RNY folks because it's all elemental iron, absorped well without much stomach acid, and usually does not cause constipation.
