Cold and tired - is this normal?
I am 2 weeks post surgery today. Until yesterday, I had been doing really good. Although my energy / stamina was down from what it was pre-surgery, it really wasn't that bad. I was able to return to work on day 6 (I work from home, so I can adjust what I do and how long I work) and everything was going well.
Yesterday, however, I found my self really really tired. When I went for my walk in the afternoon, I found I had to cut it short because I was so exhausted I didn't think I'd make it home if I did my full walk (that I'd been doing fine until then). In addition, I was really cold last night (even though my husband says it's not cold in the house) and I woke up cold this morning (and still tired).
Is this normal to develop fatigue after almost 2 weeks when the first week and a half were fine?
My period is due in a few days, so I'm wondering if maybe that has something to do with that. I can feel that I'm retaining water (and I feel constipated on top of it). So I'm uncomfortable from that too.
I've never had an issue with anemia or low energy around the time of my period before, but I realize I'm getting a lot fewer calories than my body is used to plus I'm still recovering from major surgery. So I'm hoping that's all this is.
But I'm just curious is anyone else had this experience. I have my post - op follow up with my surgeon tomorrow, so I'll ask him about it then too. But I'm just trying to put my mind at ease now that I don't have an infection or something going wrong.
Any input would be appreciated.
Sounds pretty normal to me. You're recovering from major surgery. Are you taking your vitamins, including iron? Getting enough protein and fluids?

Yes, I'm getting in 80 grams of protein and 64 oz water every day. And I take a MV plus B-12 and B-complex. They do not have me on Iron though and I'm wondering if I should be taking that too. I will ask my surgeon when I see him tomorrow. I'm reluctant to just start anything on my own. I'm trying to follow his recommendations to a T.
I would talk to him about it tomorrow. The ASMBS says menstruating women should start 54 to 63 mg iron and everyone else shoudl start 36 mg iron as soon as they are discharged from the hospital.

Good to know! I will definitely ask him. I've always run really warm. So this running cold is new to me. I feel like I do when I'm sick, but I'm not running a fever, so I don't think that's it. It just caught me off guard because it came on so suddenly and is a change from how I felt earlier in the week. I would have thought I'd be feeling stronger/better as time went on. Not weaker/colder! Oh well. I guess I just have to be patient and let my body do what it's going to do.
I had lots of energy the first 2 weeks and felt lethargic beginning week 3 through about week 8. As for feeling cold, as you lose insulation (fat) you probably will experience cold (or it's how it worked for many). I actually still stay cold most of the time unless I'm outside in south Louisiana heat. Yep, I use a floor heater at work even in the summer months because I'm cold. Some experience it early out then level out as the weight loss stops.
