Obamacare insurance exchange

Have any of you looked at the exchange for your state?  Holy batman, my state insurance is astronomically expensive for horrible coverage.  I really do hope I never have to try to purchase it through there.

Please do not make this a political post, just curious if anyone has looked into pricing.

At the moment, I am looking at $500 less per month than a year ago (because of the no pre-existing conditions) and it may well go down even more once our exchange comes into effect on 10/1.

The insurance companies refused to cover me last year because of type II diabetes and so the state option was $777 - an awful lot per month for a healthy 51 year old woman!

I had to put my divorce on hold and just have a separation agreement so I could stay on Tom's insurance!

That's crazy who can afford $777 a month?  I'm assuming that's just you right, your child will remain covered by your ex?

i had to do myself and the 2 boys for a similar plan (but not as good) I'd have to pay almost $1000 a month. The cheaper policy with $5000 per person deductible, no co-pay and a co-insurance of 80/20 would cost $129 but wth has $15000 sitting around if it's needed.

how can this help those that either don't have insurance now or can't afford to buy it?

i sure hope I never lose my coverage and it has gone down a good bit since I first had it here but I'm at least able to pay for a half decent coverage.

Thankfully, Tom has to cover Ian for as long as he is able and then Ian should be able to get Medicare.

The policy I looked at was $3300 deductible, so not too bad, at $243 per month - it's a load off my mind.

ETA:   Tom's company have advised him that he can keep me on his at this point as he's still financially liable for me through maintenance so I may not have to change at the end of the year anyway!

The exchange will not always be cheaper for most people. It just reflects how much employers pay toward the premium that we do not think about. The state fund has no employer contribution to premiums.

I hope this thread stays non-political. I am curious about what people have found, too.

A few things to remember about the state and federal exchanges and the quoted rates.  Based on income ( Not  assets) people will be entitled to federal subsidies to pay for a portion of the premium. This is based on silver coverage.  When you apply, you must provide income for past year and anticipated income for 2013.  Also premiums are based on not only state, but the city you live in.  The Wall Street Journal had an article today which discussed the premium information released today.  In general young people will pay more for insurance and older people like me will get a  the best deal.  I live in Ohio , 61 years old and pay my own insurance of $1,200. Using the National exchange, I can get the platinum coverage for about $450. net of subsidies.

Interesting and it appears to be a good option for you. I hope when they roll it out to works to help you.

I was was just curious and will check again when I have more time and more info. For now I'm thankful to be employed with insurance. I currently pay almost $400 a month in premiums For me and 2 children.

Where did you already get info for exchanges available to people in Ohio?  I looked yesterday and did not see anything posted.

A handful of companies have submitted plans - but are not yet final approved - to operate exchanges in Ohio.  Anthem is covering the whole state.  There are about 6-7 other companies that are offering plans in different counties.  You should be able to google your county and see who is offering plans.  In some counties there are 5-6 companies, in others only 2 or 3.  The plans I have seen (all levels) have pretty significant deductibles.

I am looking for some family members and friends. Some will have to file for tax exemptions primarily due to low income in order to avoid any penalties for non coverage. Some will continue on Medicaid programs.

I will be allowed to keep my present health coverage with Medicare primary, BCBS secondary and VA hospitals which cost me a lot of years of service and a lot of my health.
