high blood pressure 2 years after RNY...

I had RNY almost 2 1/2 years ago.  I was 328 lbs and am now 168 lbs.  I had high blood pressure when I was heavy, but was off all meds within 6 months after surgery with a normal blood pressure.  Now, at my last two Dr. appointments, my blood pressure has been high.  It was 141/100 yesterday.  The only thing that has changed in the last couple of months was that I had abdominoplasty on Sept 11th and wasn't able to exercise for 8 weeks.  I have been back to working out for the last 3 weeks.  Has anyone else had this problem? or know of any reason why this would happen?  Doc is having me monitor and log blood pressure for a week every morning.  Once she sees the info then she will determine if I have to go back on bp medicine.  I so don't want to have to do that.

High blood pressure, like diabetes, and cholesterol problems is not always determined by weight or overall health - sometimes it is genetic or otherwise physiological.   There are plenty of skinny healthy and unhealthy people,  who have never had WLS,  and suffer from one, some or all of these ...

Some people go into remission after RNY, but the conditions can return after a period.  Others never see a remission and it is through NO fault of their own.

It's another one of those "gone forever" type myths that veterans don't like to see!!!!!

That's what I was afraid of and that's what the doctor said too.  Oh well, I am definitely in a better place now even if I have to take more meds.  Wouldn't change it for the world.  I just didn't expect it to come back.  Thanks for the reply.

No worries - I am type II diabetic despite being normal weight and healthy - those darned genes ...    Take whatever meds you need to to stay healthy - and definitely DON'T see it as any sort of failure.   You ARE much healthier coping with this at a good weight broken heart

Sometimes low magnesium and calcium may result in elevated BP.

My BP is always higher when I go to the doctor's office.  I've been monitoring it and have gone back to meds but it isn't as high as it was before surgery.  I've also not kept up with the gym exercise, relying on garden work during the summer.  We're back at the gym this week and it feels good so I know I can get it under control, aside from that, stress takes it's toll.

I'm sorry you are dealing with bp issues again. As already stated, some health issues can come back and aren't entirely related to weight issues. That's why we see it written as remission and not a cure.

Cholesterol is one that I'm dealing with also. My medical team hasn't seen the need for me to be on meds yet but I do anticipate it eventually happening. I will probably have to manage diabetes before it's over with also. These illnesses can directly relate to family genetics.....both my mother and father's family deal with diabetes and high cholesterol.

Do you take your BP at home? Mine is always higher at the doctor's office. Are you going through stress?? Keep up with the exercise. It should help, but if you need medication, do not beat yourself up about it.
