Mystery Health Issues one year post-op...could it be related to my RNY?

I had my RNY January 2013. Since my surgery, I have had several bladder infections, but they were all treated with antibiotics and went away relatively quickly. This last month, I have been struggling with a bladder infection that is just being a b*tch (for lack of better word). I have taken two rounds of antibiotics, I had blood in my pee, horrible cramping and back pain. Doctors took a CT scan and found I have a kidney stone, but it is not obstructing, so it shouldn't be causing troubles right now. Well after another week of antibiotics, that started to feel a bit better. However, the stomach pain and back pain moved up higher in my abdomen. It comes on very strong after about 2 bites of food, and sometimes happens even with drinking. It feels exactly like my gall bladder did when I had gallstones. This is now on my left side, under my breasts. It radiates over to my mid-stomach a bit, and the pain goes into my back. My doctor started treatment for ulcers, just in case. But ulcers don't make sense because the pain gets worse with food, not better. She also took blood tests to make sure I don't have H. Pylori and to check my liver and pancreas functions. Everything came back normal, except my ALT and AST were slightly elevated (not a big surprise considering I have been on several medications and fighting infections). Everything else looks normal. I am going to be getting an ultrasound of my pancreas next week, but on my CT scan they did a couple weeks ago of my renal system, it looked normal. So I am at a loss. Anyone have any ideas on what could be going on? Or suggestions on which direction I should be looking? My doctor is at a loss....

I don't know what it might be.  I do know how frustrating it is when someone is wrong and the doctor can't figure it out.  Can your doctor refer you to a specialist if she is at a loss?  That's what I would ask for.

She is not embarrassed to ever refer me to someone else if she feels it is necessary. However, with my insurance, she knows that my bills are insanely high, so she tries to do as much as possible and rule out as much as possible before sending me elsewhere. I have worked with her for several years and she is amazing. She does have me set up to see a urologist to discuss my frequent bladder infections and kidney stone. And she did say if all of these new tests don't show anything then she will be sending me to get a scope done to see if my stomach shows anything.

Even with GB out you can still get stones in bile ducts. (google that)

It also can be peterson hernia - or adhesions that may cause twisting of the intestines or blockage. Can be so many things...

Can be constipation and gas..  Can be food sensitivity... (since RNY I discovered I now have gluten intolerance, and allergies to dairy and soy).

I can eat bread - but if I do - I get cramps and pain for 2-4 days after.. (depends on how much I ate).   I don't even need to eat bread - but if I have food that may have bread crumbs (meatballs)  I will know it a hour or so later..

I was also thinking about gall stones in the bile duct.

I had the gallstone stuck in the bile duct 10 years after the removal of the thing and it was super painful but it showed up easily in my blood work and my pancreas tests were elevated.

This really sounds like you have an active kidney stone moving, especially with the blood in the urine etc.  Those can super painful.  If they know you have one perhaps you have another they are not seeing.

I have friend who always ate and drank a lot of sugar free things and constantly had bladder and kidney infections. I read up on it and had her quit all the sugar free stuff for awhile and hasn't had an infection since. Maybe that is causing your infections. I know with having sugery we can't have sugar, but maybe you can go the natural route and use stevia for awhile and see how it goes.

You know, I think I read that artificial sweeteners can cause kidney stones as well. I am thinking of cutting back on the artificials, but geeez, I am hooked on my diet soda. I know, I know...big NO NO. I also love Powerade Zero. Maybe I will just have to bite the bullet and cut that stuff out to see if it helps.

I had a bladder infection after several rounds of antibiotics as a post op and i felt that way. Cranberry juice helped. The antibiotics made it to where the ulcer med wasn't absorbed as well. so it could be an ulcer or something like that. Good luck and hope you feel better.
