Question about Steroid's
I have been having some chest and back pain here the past few days so I went in and got checked out. They said I have some inflammation in my chest so they prescribed me prednisone and pepsid "to help my stomach" even though I told them im not suppose to take steroids.....? Anyone have any advice or any experience taking prednisone since the RNY?
Why would you not be able to take steroids? After RNY, it's NSAIDs that we're told to avoid. Those are things like aspirin, Motrin, Advil. They are NON-steroids (NSAID stands for Non Steroidal Anti Inflammatory Drug.) You should be fine with the prednisone; steroids are our only option for dealing with inflammation after RNY.

Why aren't you supposed to take steroids? I think maybe you are thinking of NSAIDS which are NON-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. The ASMBS recommends RNY patients not take NSAIDS but they don't caution against taking steroids.

As the others have already said, most surgeons don't prohibit steroids after RNY, just NSAIDs. (A few surgeons also "prohibit" steroids, but that is pretty silly because that means you cannot take ANYTHING for inflammation, which isn't practical, and the steroids don't pose the risk to your pouch that the NSAIDs do.)

Taking steroids can be bad for anyone. But if you need them - you need them. Short term are not as bad as long term use. Some people are not aware that one of side effects of steroid Use can be ulcers.. not as bad as with NSAIDS but there are chances.
Gastrointestinal Ulcers
Ulcers of the stomach or intestines can be a side effect of oral corticosteroid use, according to the Hospital for Special Surgery. The ulcers can cause mild to severe pain, and may lead to bleeding in the gastrointestinal tract. Severe bleeding, signified by black, tarry stools, may require emergency medical care. To avoid this side effect, patients should avoid taking the steroids with drugs such as ibuprofen or aspirin, take the medication after a full meal, and take the corticosteroids with an antacid.
