You certainly should alert your doctor. Protein shakes are a MUST after surgery....

FYI...unflavored just means that it doesn't have added flavoring like chocolate, straw berry, etc.  There will still be a little taste but it's great mixed with something.

Firstly, you are not dying, you are just struggling to choke down a protein shake!!!

Secondly, Unjury unflavoured will probably suck as much as any other flavour you have tried - unflavoured means it is just the yukky whey protein smell and taste without the chocolate/strawberry/whatever flavour added to mask the original smell/flavour!   You can try and drink the stuff from a cup with a lid - it is often the smell that is particularly offputting!

Many of us manage without protein shakes, but if your plan is to have them for a length of time, then I would suggest you get some samples and try to find one you can choke down until you can get your protein from food.

It is a total fallacy that you cannot do this journey without protein supplements (shakes and bars) - many of us do and are perfectly healthy!

I,  too,  found Whey protein impossible to drink post op.  My tastes and texture sensitivities changed (as I had been cautioned).  I can drink Isopure Whey Isolates without a problem,  but they can run about $4/bottle-just too costly unless used as a treat.   I found a very successful alternative in the form of EAS soy protein powder.   I get the vanilla flavor (comes in chocolate, too) and can use it plain with milk or make a milkshake with it. Each serving is about 20 grams of protein. Each canister is $9.95 at my Wal-Mart and  is about 14 servings. Soy protein is considered somewhat less nutritionally effective as whey, but is often much easier to palate.  But I compensate by being able to drink more therefore taking in adequate protein.  It's a personal trial and error until you find just the right fit for you.  Just remember throughout this life changing process your tastes continue to ebb and flow.  Be patient and journal your efforts.  Keeping track of ALL you eat and do will help keep you aware and more prone to a successful outcome.

Best of luck,

Celtie:-)

Go to the vitamin store they have samples.I know when I had my first beer or glass of wine I didn't like it.But I did learn to. There are some really good shakes out there.

I'm with Kim on the unflavored. You have to put it in something that has a stronger flavor than they whey. Like a hearty soup (not just chicken broth, trust me). I remember getting mine in pre-op. Dumped a scoop in some cottage cheese thinking I had it made. No. It was still awful. It just didn't taste like chocolate awful or strawberry awful. It's just plain unflavored awful.

Have you tried bariatricfoodie? Just google and her blog will come up. Lot's of shake recipes.

You may find you may tolerate protein shakes better after surgery, as your tastes change.  I was drinking them before surgery and then afterwards I did n 't care for them and stopped drinking them.  Then I got my lab results and was low in protein, so I started back on them.  Now I have one everyday usually for breakfast.

Like Eggface says "unflavored doesn't mean no taste". Have you tried using a sippy cup or straw so that you don't smell it? I liked the Unjury chocolate splendor prior to surgery but now can not choke it down. Luckily I'm still able to get the ready-to-drink Premier Protein - chocolate down. You could also try the clear, fruity type powders. I tried and can tolerate the Bari-wise Wild Berry and Pineapple Orange. The Isopure Grape Ice was tolerable too. CVS Pharmacy had some sample packs - the cookies and cream was good. Good luck to you.
