Do you feel hungry?

Hi!  My dad is considering WLS.  I got a sleeve 5 weeks ago.  His doctor said he can't get a sleeve so he is considering bypass.  He had heard that people with bypass still feel hunger and I was wondering if that is true.  Thanks in advance.

Yes, most people who have RNY have their hunger sensation return by a couple of months post-op, but not everyone does.  I am 7 years out and haven't felt physical hunger since surgery.

People usually describe their "new" hunger as very different from the stomach gnawing type of hunger they felt before surgery, though.  They usually describe it as an "empty" feeling.

Keep in mind, though, that no matter what kind of weight loss surgery someone has, psychological food cravings almost always return at some point.

I had read so much about people not feeling hungry post-surgery and I was all, "Finally!  Freedom from the tyranny of food!"  Sadly, that is not the case.  I was definitely feeling hunger early out and I would be satisfied once I ate.  I do get cravings for certain things and I have had to learn to tell the difference. The trickiest thing for me is learning when I am full.  Sometimes I'll get hiccups as a signal, but every now and then I've eaten too fast and blown past the fullness signal and had uncomfortable times.  I am learning to resist the "one last bite."
