I believe it is required for everyone. The pprocedure is to look inside of your stomach and check that everything is okay and safe for bariatric surgery(:

It's an upper endoscopy and I had mine done as part of my pre-surgery testing. I've had two in my lifetime. It's normal and nothing to be worried about. The procedure is just to take photos of your stomach to make sure everything is okay. My doctor put me into twilight for mine, so I didn't feel or remember anything.
