You will likely get answers from people who don't understand dumping so ignore anything that isn't sugar/carb related because that is NOT dumping!   Ingesting fried food or excessively fatty food may give you gastric distress (I still malabsorb fat) but this is not dumping...

Any liquid sugar, anything with HFCS, cake, ice cream does it for me.  It has changed over the years though and I have become more tolerant, but I still have my definite no's.

Remember that dumping only occurs in the minority of RNY'ers so chances are it will never happen to you!

Different things do it for me. Generally anything with high processed sugar. I have dumped on mashed potatoes and gravy ( never again!) and bananas. The natural sugar in some fruits is hard for me to process and sometimes makes me lightheaded, though I can handle berries.

Basically any time I consume more than 12-15 grams of sugar I dump.  Horribly.  In the beginning I was told that many people lose the dumping syndrome the farther out they get, but at almost exactly 6 years out now mine is much gotten progressively worse. I truly wouldn't wi**** upon my most hated enemy.  I also get severe reactive hypoglycemia (which some call late dumping) about an hour and a half after most dumping episodes.  My blood sugar routinely dips down into the thirties.

I absolutely have got to be ruthless when it comes to eating sugars.  If I don't know and can't find out how many grams of sugar are in a dessert serving, I limit myself to 3-5 bites of whatever it is.  Usually three, especially if we are out somewhere just to be safe.

Fortunately, sugar isn't a necessity in any diet so I have a fair amount of control over this, for which I am grateful.

You are correct though, everyone is different.   Kim is also correct, for some reason a LOT of people refuse to believe the definition of true dumping syndrome:  heart racing, sweating, panicky feeling, generally wishing the sky would just go ahead and fall on you at any moment type thing. It is miserable.  People seem to think it consists mainly of diarrhea - which is not the case.

Only 30% or so of RnY patients dump.  Many more get sick from eating things that are too fatty, etc, but that has nothing to do with dumping.

From WebMD "After gastric surgery, it can be more difficult to regulate movement of food, which dumps too quickly into the small intestine. Eating certain foods makes dumping syndrome more likely. For example, refined sugars rapidly absorb water from the body, causing symptoms. Symptoms may also happen after eating dairy products and certain fats or fried foods."

Personally I just had a dumping situation after getting a SF peppermint mocha latte at Starbucks. I had ordered it once before and did fine. I was in target and ordered at their Starbucks.. didn't work out so well. I did go back and the girl insisted it was SF syrup... I don't know what was different from the first time...(she did refund my money).

The key to what you quoted from WebMD (which is hardly the last word in medical matters, anyway) is that "symptoms may also happen after eating dairy...". Yes, people may experience some of the same symptoms of dumping with other foods, but actual dumping is a very specific physiological response to carbs/sugar and is NOT caused by dairy or fats. Those things may cause people to become ill, but it is not dumping.

Yes, some people are sensitive to lactose, and have trouble with milk but not cheese... but they usually characterize that as lactose intolerance rather than dumping... But now that I think about it, I wonder why?

Do you know, Hala?

This is my take on that:  There is a difference between lactose intolerance and dumping.  I am not lactose intolerant but I dump on milk sugar - lactose or predigested (like in lactose free milk,  normal yogurt, greek yogurt) milk sugar will make me dump.

People who are lactose intolerant can still drink lactose free milk or eat yogurt.  But even small amount - like 5-6 gr of lactose- may make them sick and they may get runs.

Lactose intolerant symptoms may occur much later, and symptoms are typically runs and cramping, while dumping have more than that +possible carb coma + RH after... (lactose intolerance should not cause RH, or carb coma)

People who dump on too much sugar including milk sugar or fruits...  may consume some of it without dumping ...(below the threshold for dumping).  I dump on more than 9-10 gr in slider form (yogurt)  - but liquid (milk) make me start dumping on 1/2 glass of milk (i.e. added to coffee.. )

I started dumping on milk sugar app 9-10 months post op:  Ate 1 cup regular plain yogurt...ugh...carb coma + RH followed...

FYI: over the years I also developed dairy - milk protein allergy (whey, casein) that is not equivalent to lactose intolerance (some people assume dairy allergy =lactose intolerance)

The only foods that have resulted in dumping for me are Marie Callendar's pumpkin pie filling, regular ice cream, and too much chocolate.  The pumpkin pie filling incident was when I was just 4 months out (I didn't look to see that this particular brand of pumpkin pie has a TON of sugar and fat, so even the small amount I and was too much).  The other incidents have been spread out over the 7 years since surgery, NOT things I was eating the first year!

I have more trouble with digestive upset (NOT dumping, but shares some of the symptoms) if I eat too much fat than I do with dumping. It has been that way from the very beginning.  Too much fat makes me queasy, causes intestinal distress and then diarrhea.
