Question about swallowing
I had my surgery 2 1/2 weeks ago (RNY). I came home and even in the hospital after they came in with jello and water, I seemed to have no trouble swallowing.
My question is...is that normal for people that have had RNY, to be able to swallow just the same as when they did prior to surgery?
I was told to sip, sip, sip. Well, I drank my bottle of water just like I did before surgery. I could not drink the same amount of course, but I didn't have to sip. Also, now that I am on pureed stage, I eat cheesy eggs and SF pudding just like I did before surgery-just not the same amount. Is this a bad sign that I have no nausea and can swallow normally? Just curious as to how others felt right after surgery.

I had no problems swallowing (although your thread title did make me laugh a bit -- guess I'm a little more immature than I should be...) -- even right after surgery. In fact, I found "sipping" to be quite annoying. I will say that gulping too much liquid at once did cause me pain in my chest at first, but that went away pretty rapidly, too.

MOST people have no trouble swallowing and have no nausea after RNY! It means you are typical!
The people who do have trouble are the ones in the minority, but they seem like the majority because they are the ones who post... They post because they are having trouble but the 6 other people who had surgery the same day DON'T post to say "4 days out and no problems at all". This is unfortunate, because it leads people to EXPECT to have trouble rather than to expect NOT to have trouble.
The surgery doesn't affect your throat other than minor irritation from the intubation, and even the end of the esophagus isn't affected directly, but may be a bit swollen at first because of the proximity to the area that was cut and stapled. any swelling thee usually resolves pretty quickly, though.
