Nervous...

I decided to go through with RNY, but I have to say I'm nervous and was a little surprised at what I've found as I'm doing the research.

For the most part the comments on this website regarding the surgery are highly positive.  I saw my Family practice doctor and discussed it with her, (and she weighs about 130 lbs) and I expected her to try to talk me out of it, instead she was highly supportive and said very good things about the procedure.  The surgeon I'm scheduled with was highly encouraging (although I guess I expected that).

I think the thing that is making me nervous is the old saying, what seems to be too good too be true...usually is...

I'm looking forward to embarking on this journey, I'm 44 with a 4 yr old son, who I just want to be able to keep up with, and let me tell you its a challenge now...

The last thing I wanted to say was, I'm really glad I found this site, as I know from experience support is essential whenever you take on a new challenge, and even reading your historical posts today made me feel more secure in my choice.  :-)

Welcome. I had my RNY 3 weeks ago. I can already tell you that I would do it again in a heartbeat. Recovery was much easier than I expected. Of course, not everyone has the same experience. I am already off diabetes meds, the headaches I have had daily for 30 years are gone, and I'm going off my GERD medication next week. I feel good. I don't have tons of energy yet, but I probably have as much as I had before. This surgery is worth it. Do exactly what your surgical team tells you to do, and you will be fine.

So ..what is scaring you is too many positive reviews for the surgery.

I will tell you the honest truth.  I would do it again in a heart beat but the surgery is not for everyone.  For example, I have a cousin that almost DIED because he ate solid food (and in too great of a quantity) before he was supposed to. He was in the protein shake phase and he decided he NEEDED pizza.

You have to measure your food.

You may have to track the kinds of food that you eat to see good results. For example, I cant eat a crap load of carbs. I barf it I eat sugary desserts.  Sometimes, I want a cookie so bad.

you can eat around the surgery and regain.

What you get out of RNY is what you put imto it.

Well being the voice of reason, you should be nervous it is major surgery and they re arrange all our guts!  I was not particularly nervous I decided to work a 12 hour shift the night before my surgery. I work nights.

I have thought to myself what have I done, but then I look at the scale and I'm down 36 pounds since surgery I am exactly one month post op.  42 years old with a two year old.

(He has pointy elbows).

It was 3 weeks before I could bend over without pain or be able to sleep on my side.

Everyony heals differently if you follow your doctors plan (they are all different)you will do great!

Had my RNY 10.5 years ago and have never regretted it for one day ...  I knew enough to know what to expect (which is why I advise to read, read, read) and had no surprises or problems from day 1.

There are more people like me than those that have regrets or complications - we just aren't as vocal.

There are plenty of vets (5 years +) who would be happy to tell you what to expect long term - and a ton of honeymooners and journeymen to ask the practical early/ journey questions  OH is a great resource!

Let me start by saying that I had been overweight or obese my life whole life. When I had surgery August 29,2012 I weighed 265 pounds and was 52 years old. I was diabetic, had constant knee and back pain, uncontrolled high blood pressure, high cholesterol and skyhigh triglycerides. I was out of breath going down my basement steps. I wore a tight 26 pants and had pretty much become very isolated from others. I followed my surgeons guidelines to a t and headed toward my first goal of 160 which I met before 4 months. Then I lowered my goal to 145 which I passed by 7 months. I got to 118 at one year and have maintained between 118 and 122 since. It isn't easy as it involves making many wise choices every day. Choices to eat protein first, measure my food and stick to 3 one cup meals and two small snacks,to drink lots of calorie free liquids but not with my meals, and choices to move more. I exercise about 80 minutes a day nearly every day,and though I was winded going down to my treadmill at first, now I do 4 miles in about 56 minutes and can still talk! I feel great and my blood sugars, cholesterol, triglycerides and blood pressure are all normal. I wear a size one and XS tops, but best of all I feel great! I can do anything I set my mind to do. I am thankful every day for my surgery and my chance to live my life again instead of just sitting on the sidelines. I can go to flea markets now and walk all day instead of sitting on a bench somewhere. I used to tell my family that I liked to people watch, but in reality I couldn't keep up with my family and I didn't want to hold them back. Surgery was the best decision I ever made. Best wishes as you start your journey. Get ready for a wild ride!

All,

I really appreciate the info.

NICUPNORTH, I had to laugh at the pointy elbows remark because I can relate now, I can only imagine how I will deal with those elbows next mth, :)

I am floored when I see weight loss of 40 lbs in a mth, wow!
