I'm doing it all wrong...still...

Today is 7 weeks post op and I think I'm doing it all wrong.  Anyone else get that feeling?  I am disappointed in my second month weight loss, I ate too much pork chop tonight and feel like I'm going to explode...who knew I would wish I could throw up?  I still haven't had the energy to get in my recommended 3 miles a day.  I am not consistent with my vitamins, water, or protein.  Seems like I get 2 out of 3 but I'm not consistently perfect yet.  Will I ever learn?  How do we practice what we learn?  I have learned so much on this forum but haven't been able to put it all in practice yet.  When do we graduate to doing it right most of the time?

Be patient with yourself. Pretty soon your surgery won't occupy so much of your brain, it did get better for me once I got a routine down. You got this!

The eating too much is a learning experience. Sometimes it creeps up on you when you aren't expecting it. I have been mid-chew and realized I took one bite too many and instead of swallowing it, spit it out.  Honestly your vitamins, water and protein are more important than your exercise right now. Yes you should be moving but don't worry whether you reach your 3 miles. It is your job right now to get the vitamins, water and protein in. Do I get it right all the time? no. If one strategy doesn't work, try another. For me what helped my vitamins was making myself a list of vitamins and times on an index card. I keep it in the basket I keep my vitamins in so I can double check myself as I take them that I didn't forget anything. Not getting enough protein and water in can affect your weight loss too. And we don't lose weight in a steady line, there are some weeks and months that are better than others. Be kind to yourself. You are learning along the way.

My surgery was nov 3. I broke my foot on 12-24! My exercise is nil due to non weight bearing and the crutches are crazy tiring! I have not weighed since before Christmas. I am doing everything as per MD and RD. I vomit a lot and sometimes after 1 or 2 bites. Today I was ale o get a boca burger and later some pot roast at my mom's and I held it down. I hate food and such this point! I feel you!

This is a process - really try to make water, protein and vitamins your priority now.  Trust in your plan. It works you just have to stick with it.

Try portioning out your vitamins into daily doses and leave them where you will remember to take them.  In the early days I filled up 4 ½ litre water bottles in the morning and left them on the counter so I could see how much I drank throughout the day and they were easy to grab when I was on the go.  I also tried to drink one before breakfast, the second before lunch and the others in the afternoon and evening. After month three I was drinking almost 3 litres a day without effort and I still do even 17 months post-op.  Once it's routine it becomes automatic.

You have to be real with yourself.  You need to take these supplements for life.  You need to drink enough to avoid kidney stones, to promote weight loss and maintenance.  You need protein period.  Make it a priority - don't give yourself excuses.  You can do it!  You are worth the effort

"How do we practice what we learn? "

- Perhaps you should call your surgeons office and meet with his support staff (i.e. dietician). My surgeons dietican had me practicing what I learned in the 6 months BEFORE surgery.  I was preparing my home with small plates, bowls, spoons, measuring cups and etc months BEFORE the surgery. I was practicing weighing/measuring my food months BEFORE the surgery.

I am worried that you havent had coaching and enough practice before surgery. This MAY be to your disadvantage.

I figure it is not a bad thing to stand close to my surgeon and his support staff.  I had this surgery with an expectation of a particular outcome and I will do EVERYTHING REQUIRED to get that outcome.

Good luck

Seven weeks post op is not a long time in the scheme of things. If you are like me, I had a lifetime of learning bad habits and those habits don't change in seven weeks. The most important thing is that you know you need to do better AND you are asking for help on how to  be successful. I always plan my food the night before for the next day. I write down everything I am going to eat, when I am going to eat it and the amounts I am going to eat. If it is not on the list I don't eat it (for the most part! Of course, I have slips but if it isn't there it causes me to pause and ask myself if it is worth it - carbs are my downfall). I also prepare my plate then, put all the food away so I am not tempted to pick at it. I measure everything. I am 5 months post op RNY and if I had a pork chop I would probably only be able to tolerate a 1.5" X 1.5" piece. A normal serving - which we probably won't be able to ever tolerate - is the size of the palm of your hand (not including your fingers/thumb). To me, routine has become very important. My vitamins are on the counter, I set my phone alarm for 6:30p so when it goes off I know I have to exercise. I agree that exercise, while important, is not a priority. Protein, fluids and vitamins are. I still struggle with exercise (I bought a recumbent bike as I have knee issues) and I still strive for an hour/day however, if I only make a half hour then at least I have done something. Be kind to yourself. You will be able to do this!! Perfection is hard to achieve!

Revision on 11/20/14

I had my surgery on 11/20/14! I am still learning day by day as well. I am trying to get into some kind of a routine with the vitamins and calcium and all that. I am not allowed to eat things like pork chops yet. Not till end of March!! Soft foods till then. I think we will get the hang of it, this is a learning experience. I tend to post a question on OG every time one pops in my head. It can be pretty helpful to learn what others are do. Anyway just wanted to wish you good luck.

Thanks everyone. My post was written by by my evil twin last night. Luckily I slept her away too!  Ha ha. The beauty of life is they each day is a brand new start. Obviously I was a little aggressive with my subject. I'm not doing it "all wrong" still, just can't do it "all perfectly" yet!

I so appreciate the feedback and understanding that other people feel the same as me.

I know there are people who post on here as if they have EVERYTHING down pat from day 1, but I'm afraid I call bullcrap!

This is a journey and we all learn to both do things well and make missteps along the way - My suggestion would be to hang out on here - take part in the daily eating post.  You will get support, suggestions and hopefully learn that none of us is perfect!

I can pretty much guarantee that most of the perfect people disappear after a year or so - and when they do so you will be in a position to offer positive support to those coming up behind you - reassuring them that that we are all only human!

I'm glad today is a better day for you
