Hello everyone    I think I have been taking the wrong type of stool softener....I have been using Walmart brand Equate softgels......just dawned on me that I "think" we don`t absorb this type?

My doctor recommends milk of magnesia, I took miralax prior to surgery off and on, doc does not like it's says it can be habit forming.

You don't need to "absorb" them per se, they are to lubricate and soften, so as long as you aren't pooping out whole softgels, they're doing their job!

My very favorite bowel product is "Dr. Christopher's Lower Bowel Formula."  It is an herbal remedy that has been around a long time. You can get it on Amazon, or usually at health food stores.

You can take 1-2 caps with each meal, or 2 at bedtime as a regular supplement.  Or, just save it for times  when you are really backed up, then take 6 at bedtime.  In the morning:  ta-da!  I prefer to always take it at night, small dose or large.  Sometimes if I take it with every meal, it seems like too much.

It is pretty mild and safe for long term use.  It does have some cayenne in it, I think.

Before my RNY (less than 2 weeks ago), I found this formula in a liquid form.  Once I advanced to soft foods, I started using one dropper each evening.  I am totally regular now each day.  Sorry if that is TMI...but I have a boy with IBS, so we talk poop all the time around here!

Does anyone know if miralax long term is good/bad/OK???  I take one dose divided in my water everyday and have been having good luck with that but don't want to get into a habit that will cause me trouble later on. . .

I take four of them a day. 2 in the AM and 2 in the PM... they are the generic for Colace.

Keeps me moving.  My doc says that is much better than Miralax for long term maintenance.
