Hubs and I are going to a big train show this weekend and we havwe to stay over. we will be going to restaraunts for dinner.  This will be my first time. Any tips? I'm nervous.  I dont know which ones we will be going to but i ave checked out some potential menus.  I can do steak as ling as it is filet, but any other suggestions wouldbe great.  Also, how to handle waitstaff when they see I have eaten only a tiny bit.  Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

personally for me going out to eat has been hard. especially if appitizers are ordered, and salads, it takes so long to get the meal. now when we go out to eat my wife dosent order any appitizers we try to make it quick and painless for me. wait staff tends to understand , you can ask for a box right at the begininng of the meal and put what you wont eat away. the only time i get funny looks is when they ask what i want to drink and i say nothing. but as long as you and your hubby are on the same page. you shouldent have to many issues

I find wait staff have a tough time with the concept of no beverage, so order water and let hubs drink it.  They seem too busy to notice if you've eaten a tiny bit or a lot.  Only one time did I have someone notice my small portion of salad bar commenting, "why bother." ha.  I rarely follow advice to share an order or eat off hubs plate but it might work for you.  Consider letting hubs finish what you don't eat.  My 6'5" always-thin, always-hungry man cleans up after me.  If he's not with me,  I ask for a take-home container to accompany my order in an effort to control portion size because it's easy to mindlessly eat too much when gabbing with friends at a restaurant.  My favorite things to order when going out are meat, like steak/fish, with a veggie side or else an omelet. Have fun at the train show, Lucky!

Before ordering, I tell the wait staff that I had gastro surgery and can't eat a big serving of food.  By doing this, they know and it won't be a big deal.  Order something that your husband likes and he can enjoy what you can't eat.

Stick to what works for you.  Don't try new foods in case they don't work for you.  Keep it simple.  Remember to eat slow and chew really well to avoid any issues.

Have a great time at the train show and enjoy yourself.

I have been out to eat for our date nights and I have been having good luck with steamed shrimp and chicken.  If they ask I say that I have dietary restrictions.  Most of the time no one comments at all.  Most places have chicken and I just ask for it plain (sometimes the sauces really make me sick).  Good luck and have a great time!

Soup and salad are my safest food eating out. I have ordered a grilled ch****n, pepper and onion wrap and asked them give it to me without the wrap and it came out very nice. I also order omelets, just asked for them cooked soft, as diners and things tend to cook them on the dry side. Just let them bring you water and you are good. Sometimes I order tea or coffee and drink it before the food comes if I think it will be awhile.

You are under no obligation to share your medical information with wait staff - what you eat and how much you eat are your business!

I find that if you don't make a fuss, other people won't either.   If you enjoy making yourself center of attention (and some do) then by all means make a big deal out of NOT ordering a drink (I take the water and leave it! - I've been doing this for 10 years and no one has EVER questioned it).   Same with food, if you want to put yourself out there - do it - but no one questions how much I eat - they just box my leftovers ... and if they questioned me I would simply say, "the food was delicious and I am looking forward to enjoying it for lunch tomorrow".

It really IS that simple!

I have been eating like that for almost 7 years now..

Fish is the easiest for me.. I can eat more of it.. soft moist fish..

these days  so many people are on so many weird diets.. I order proteins + veggies.. I don't do grains or pasta..  and since i eat slower (at least I try to)  if the party orders appetizers - I ask my main meal to be brought together with their appetizers. I may eat part of my meal...  and if the dinner is long (i.e. social - 2+ hr event)   an hour later I can have more of my proteins and some veggies.. (i.e. I may have 3 oz of my fish... wait 1 hr and have the rest 3 oz of the fish and  few bits of veggies...)  I learned not mind cold food..

Another idea is to order just a appetiser and a small side salad... sald can really turn into mushy slider food... then I follow up with protein type appetiser (i.e. shrimps..)
